Q: What's your Budget?
A: Maximum 1000 USD

Q: What will be your primary usage for the notebook be?
A: Casual web surfing, watching movies occasionally (have external speakers so high end audio is not really required), Connecting laptop to 46" Sony LCD for surfing, movies etc, Office application, almost no gaming

Q: What size and weight considerations do you have?
A: 13.3" to 14" (15.6" tends to be bulky in general and currently using a 13.3" portege office laptop which seems good. Also have a 15.6" satellite but the weight is too much)

Q: Any brand that you prefer, or any brand that you detest?
A: Brands not preferred are -> MSI, HP, Gateway and other such not so known brands, would like a brand having International warranty as i will be buying from US.

Q: Are you considering Ultrabooks ?
A: No, since i would like the laptop to have DVD writer/ ROM. And Ultrabook costs a bomb IMO.

Q: Are SSD important to you ?
A: No since SSD usually come in lesser capacities and if i go for higher ones, cost increases substantially, ok with normal laptop HDD.

Q: Any preference on processor / GPU
A: I have no knowledge about i3, i5 and all so no preference.

Q: Any brand / model you have considered till now ?
A: Yes, have considered the Toshiba Portege R835 (sub model depends on config).
Sample ->
Amazon.com: Toshiba Portégé R835-P94 13.3-Inch Laptop (Magnesium Blue): Computers & Accessories

Q: Any other considerations?
A: Laptop will be bought from amazon.com only and nowhere else irrespective of how good a deal elsewhere is.
500 or above GB HDD will be good to have
Not sure if Full HD screen makes any difference but if it is possible in this budget it is good else no issues.
Good battery life is required. Had bought MSI and battery sucks and one of the laptop's battery is dead.
Should not be heavy.

Will be buying in next 2-3 months

Why not ultrabooks if they're in your budget ? Though you'll have to drop ODD. Have a look at newely launched Sony T series. Configuring with i7 + 500GB MLC drive sums to 999$. You can get an external drive for 30-40$.

Actually yes ultra books will do as I have an external drive.
Can you link me to that Sony one ? Also have ultra books matured enough to buy at this stage ?
Edit: just checked the link. Hope it is there on amazon or comes soon.

Still open to more options.

Are ASUS laptops really that good as I have seen them being suggested on many websites. The only companies I was considering till now was Toshiba and Sony. Should I also put ASUS in the list ?
Also i am open to ultra books as well as normal laptops.
I am just very confused. But I definitely don't want a 15.6" one. A 14" or 13.3" is my preference.

Apart from Zenbook, I can't find a worthy option. Asus are good, but mostly in budget bracket or ROG series, which you don't require. Either get they Vaio I suggested or as an option take a look Samsung 5 or 7 series.

What laptop companies provide International warranty ? I only know of Dell but would want to know whether Toshiba / Sony / ASUS provides ? Just note i am not considering Dell for my new laptop.

I think Sony comes with Inernational warranty. Not sure though.
I had bought a SONY 6 months ago. But not sure as i dint had this in my prefernce list:ashamed:

As of now i have drilled down to any VFM ultrabook (still looking at the options) and the Toshiba Portege R835 laptop which is also quiet sleek (personally using the R700 portege now - office laptop) and its weight is also comparable to ultrabooks at 1.4 Kgs types and it even includes a DVD RW (which i know would be used rarely).
Toshiba has recently refreshed its portege lineup and cost of the R900 series has shot up above 1000 $ which i would not prefer. I am just hoping that in case i cannot zero down any ultrabook then portege R835 is still available on amazon.

Sony looks really promising, the one JuGGa has pointed but it is very very new and can only decide when some reviews are out and most importantly when it becomes available on amazon.

My vote will be for Sony T series ultrabook. Its much more VFM compared to X1. Apart from a bit extra processing power, say ~10 percent, you get much more balanced config plus the looks, plus 100$ saving! That's just my view.

I do concur what you are saying and no doubt sony one looks really good. I am waiting for it to hit the stores and hope to see it in nearby bestbuy / frys electronics so i can actually have a look and feel. Also it is very important for me for it to be available on amazon.com But yes this sony one is definitely one of the options i will be considering.

@raksrules Well, right click has to be done on a "certain" area. This is common with ultrabooks but often criticised. Make you sure you use it before you buy. Also, the same model is about to be launched here in India too, listed already at the site, but only i3 & i5 version, not i7; rest same sepcifications. Also, prices of Vaio notebooks are almost same here as compared to US.

Regarding the touchpad, it's probably in the fourth quadrant. Read it somewhere with regards to the Acer Aspire M3 Ultrabook (new launch). As @JuGGa said, do try it out before buying.

So i am just back after visiting Fry's electronic store and Best Buy here and had a chance to look at many laptops and some ultrabooks.
Most of the super thin ultrabooks did not have a LAN port which i prefer to have. Also being super slim they have only SSD and in most cases limited to 128 GB which i feel is less for my requirements. Even 256GB might have done the trick. Not sure though. Also most of them weigh like 3 lbs or so.
I did not get to see the sony T series as it is newly launched.
Toshiba Z835 was super thin and looked very good but i have seen a very serious issue like screen cracking. I am not willing to take that risk.
Toshiba Portege R835 is not an ultrabook but an ultraportable laptop which has weight like 3.2 Lbs or so which is more or less around ultrabooks weight.
I am now confused between buying an ultrabook or get the Toshiba Portege R835. If Ultrabook then should i wait for couple of months (i am in US for another 5 months or so).

Anyone has any idea about the new Sony vaio S series 15.5" laptop which have 1080p IPS screens ?
How good they are and anywhere I can get more details about them ?
I tend to confuse the new S series with older SE series.
