Waiting for 8TB drives
Ok I will try to some in the next batch :) I am not getting good pricing on 8TB so i am really not getting it as the pricing i am getting is close to 11/12K for 8TB and at that price it makes sense to pay a few thousands more and get the 10TB.

Paid for one WD UltraStar DC HC510 10TB.

Thanks @aasimenator for patiently answering my endless queries. :)
Hi everyone.

I received WD UltraStar DC HC510 10TB HDD today. Thanks to @aasimenator

Initially, it was not being detected by SATA power connector but was detected with MOLEX to SATA power connector (i3-12100 + ASUS Prime H610M-E D4).

I have put it for surface scan. It is making a noise after every 5 seconds (fix interval) since last 50 minutes (Voice 002.zip). Is it normal?

HDtune shows some warning "Interface CRD error count" (Please see the screenshot). What is it?

Is everything normal? Sorry, I have not been using mechanical HDDs in my PC since last 7-8 years so no experience with these HDDs.

CRC errors happen due to bad sata cable, try changing the cable and see if the count increases.

Hey,

I sent you a screenshot of the smart data as well yes?
1714909323480.png

Compare it with yours, mine doesn’t have it and it is not something that happens when the drive is offline.

That 2 looks like its happening after you puggled it in, so as @rajch2002 mentioned use a proper sata data cable.

Some noise is common these drives do make noise, but are still silent than Seagate drives. Remember Enterprise drives are not built for quite operations, as desktop drives. They dont care about silence or vibrations all they care about is speed and reliability. You can check its datasheet it will tell you the same

Thanks. Hard Disk Sentinel is showing same parameters as yours at my place also. Just curious about HDTune Warning. Will change cable and see once error scanning is complete.

I changed 4 SATA cables and 2 SATA power to Molex power connectors but the result was same. Later I realized that "The Error Count of 2" was there in the screenshot sent by the seller but I didn't notice because "Hard Disk Sentinel" doesn't highlight it whereas "HD Tune Pro" highlighted it and I noticed.

Left positive feedback anyway.

That's because CRC error count is almost always due to bad sata cable & it doesn't affect hdd health in anyway & only affect data transfers resulting in data corruption so many hdd tools don't highlight this error. Once a crc error is recognized & recorded in SMART stats it never goes away so that 2 error was likely due to usage of a bad sata cable sometimes in the past & it will stay here permanently until entire SMART data is reset.

@aasimenator, I have completed testing the 14tb HC530.
  • SMART values matched the screenshot you sent me prior to shipping.
  • Completed short and extended SMART self tests without issue
  • Completed Unraid pre-clear without issue
  • Loaded up approx 80% with data. Speeds are as expected.
Leaving feedback.

Hello everyone,

The package came in early :) Drives have been tested on a short test and have passed, all drives have 100% health and are of the same age.
They are still under WD Warranty for the next 2 years (expiring in 2026) but since these are not Indian drives but imported, and I don't know the region from where they are imported, You can consider them out of warranty (unless you know a way to get warranty from WD then it would be your gain)

Model: Western Digital UltraStar DC HC530

Cache: 512MB
Speed: up to 255 MB/s
Drive Type: CMR
Health: 100%
Power-on-Time: 1000+ DAYS
Condition: GOOD
Manufacturing Date: ~ 2020

I will take one. Is it compatible with normal x570 motherboard without any power cable modifications needed ? Read somewhere that some WD disks require some modifications done to the sata power plug which I am not keen on !

Thanks

Don't modify anything. Just buy a molex to sata power cable and use that if required.

Thanks. This is something I'd rather not do. Which models are affected by this sata power issue ?
I googled a bit and this model ( pic shown by seller ) doesn't need molex to sata adapter because 2nd last character is L. If 2nd last char is 0 then molex to sata is needed.

I have not heard of any sort of an issue with this drive, the HC510 does have that problem but not had any issues with this one, they all work well on my 12th gen i5 system and not had any issues with any of these drives nor needed to use Molex connectors.

Another way to check for a specific drive is to check the warranty coverage for the serial number here: https://support-en.wd.com/app/warrantystatusweb

For one of the drives posted by @aasimenator this is what shows up:

1715593790084.png

P3_PWDIS_Not support => means the power disable feature (which causes the hdd to not be detected with some older PSUs/backplanes) is not present.

More details are here from WD: https://documents.westerndigital.co...h-brief-western-digital-power-disable-pin.pdf
