All those of you clamouring to use Android on a Nokia phone, have you actually used Android and S^3 side by side? Not much to differentiate either of them, except the crappy battery life on Android OS (My Desire Z barely gets me through the day on one charge), and equally, Android's decent notification system.

Symbian does everything Android can do, with better battery life, as it is more optimised for mobile operation. Heck, why do you think those dual-core CPUs are so in demand for Android?
Agreed on all that you said, but then comes robustness, loads of apps games and features.

@Th, its all about perception. The EVO 4G mobile phone out by HTC when much better features was still losing out to the iPhone. Its about brand recognition and glitter nowadays. I think Nokia is taking the right step forward. Anything other than this current situation is good.

Even in India Nokia is loosing ground. Many people prefer Cos. like Micromax, Videocon for the features they offer in the price => VFM.

The problems with Nokia are 0% VFM, Arrogant CC & delay in adapting to the new trend.

?

Angry birds, Fruit Ninja.. all of them are available for Symbian as well.

Apps? Name one thing Android can do that Symbian can't..

Features? Ditto..

Nokia phones are now shit. I lost my Samsung phone and bought a Nokia C5. I bought Nokia because of the brand name. But I now realize that how far is Nokia behind their competitors. Simple intuitive features which were present on cheap Samsung phones are missing on Nokia like Multiple message deletes, no username on message or miss call alerts etc. Also, many features are downright inconvenient.

Most people buy Nokia because the brand loyalty it enjoyed previously. Once they realized the phones are shit and cheap Chinese phones offer better features, they will never come back.

well sooner or later they will opt for Android or windows OS. I am an Nokia user from past 9 years ,among various phone from Nokia i have been used my last phone was N79 . now i am using Samsung galaxy 3:D

2 year back NOKIA was arrogant and overconfident. They snubbed Android. This is what they get for it.

Either they are/were too much optimistic about their meegoo OS OR they feared competition on Android platform.

This mail surely shows that, they have realized what they have lost. They admit it, they have lost it, now nobody can deny it.

I see better future for NOKIA, whatever their plans might be.

I get what you are saying, but CHOICE matters too. Having gravity as a twitter client for nokia rocks, but look at android, quite a few equally awesome clients.

Besides, im more of a WP7 fan. That OS rocks!

I have a spare extended (1800 mah) battery from ChiChiTech for my G2 that I wouldn't mind selling. Best part is it doesn't need a change in the battery door. Hit me up on PM if interested :P

Here's the link from where it was purchased! CHICHITEC SPRINT HTC EVO 4G BATTERY 1800mAh high capacity OEM Verizon Incredible Droid TOUCH PRO2 HTC HERO

And heres a discussion on them Battery - xda-developers

Read this post from this blog: Communities Dominate Brands: The Nokia CEO 'Burning Platform' memo at Engadget, doesn't ring true to my ears..

It clearly explains this post by engadget is most probably a hoax which is ...aimed at rallying troops, that is uniting all the Nokia/Symbian haters. Why would Nokia leave all their time developing Symbian and MeeGo go for waste and switch to an inferior OS. I sense some conspiracy here, Nokia doesn't need WP7, WP7 needs Nokia and someone is desperately trying to rally public support through fake letters of self appreciation.

It's either that or Nokia have a problem at their high level.

+1

I am dying to see MeeGo phone..I am 99.99% sure that NOkia will not go to WP7 or android. But if 0.01% turns into reality...it will be disastrous for nokia in the long run. They will join the assembly line of OEMs churning out 4" slabs :(

There is a reason why Samsung has developed in house OS aka bada. Nothing comes close to controlling the OS and ecosystem i.e having your on OS and eco-system. I really liked Nokia's Qt strategy. I think on 11 Feb they will annouce some tie-up with MicroSoft regarding apps like Office Suite etc..

If they go WP7 way, it will be like shooting self in groin :P

Since the last two years, touchscreen phones slowly and steadily began to dominate the market and constitute the bulk of high end and now even mid range global phone sales. Nokia was too heavily invested in Symbian (which was inherently not suitable for touchscreen back then) and they chose to ignore this emerging trend hoping that it would die away. Well, it didn't and they are paying for it now.

They did not do much on the hardware front either for touchscreen phones. AFAIK none of their phones had capacitive touch. Also, if I'm not mistaken, they went ahead and released a bunch of lacklustre phones that did not appeal to anyone in the face of such strong competition further strengthening their perception as an old school company. (They did however provide other improvements such as 3.5mm jack on most of their phones, providing many VFM budget and business phones etc).

I've not used Symbian v3 but if the reviews I've read are anything to go by, it just isn't as slick as Android. Plus it's late to the party i.e. Android is now a household name and dare I say enjoys that "cool" status (even though it's implementation is far from perfect). Even if Nokia does manage to come out with something better, it would probably not sell due to their already battered image.

What should they do to improve? I'm not sure. Pitting Symbian against Android has not worked. It would probably work in their favour if they embraced it instead and reduced their R&D spend on Symbian or Meego. Also, more features in their budget models wouldn't hurt. They need to concentrate on their strengths, markets like India where their brand has good legacy and need to come up with a product portfolio that other phone manufacturers find it difficult to be in.

imo Nokia should still keep coming out with a few good candybar phones; like the c5 but better designed maybe. I'd go for such a phone every time over a touchscreen model.

Nice letter from the CEO.

I dont understand, why Nokia didn't ramp up their product line when the iOS and Android started picking up their market share. What made them wait for so long and now think about the future actions.

Hi guys,

I have used many phones e.g. (maxx mobile, micromax, Samsung Galaxy S, Sony Ericson, Motorola, etc and many more)

But personally i guess the best user experience that I get is from Nokia, Currently i am using Nokia N8 and it suits best for my needs, of a hobbyist photographer, occasional browsing and chat, smsing, phone calls, playing games and above all watching movies and listening songs while traveling.

It gives me the best user exp. I just love my device.

Further I agree that nokia, is been left out of the android, practically they still think that they are in commanding position, and they want to dominate with all their things like typical Europeans, which they may loose with android as all they will have is their hardware.

But I guess android might be the way to go for nokia, as when it comes to hardware they are the best. Also i guess their tieup with WP7 will not be enough, they have to release android based phone to cut into the competition.

I still remember the time few years back when microsoft approached nokia for WP based devices and nokia instead of politely saying NO to msft just insulted them. now they are paying for it.

Still I am a nokia fan....

Bloomberg: Nokia definitely in talks with Microsoft, partnership likely (update: WSJ, too) -- Engadget

No one read this on engadget?

Nokia will jump from the burning platform this Friday, but whither will it dive? Towards Microsoft and Windows Phone 7, as continually rumored, or towards Google and Android? Two turkeys told us the latter isn't likely, and Bloomberg's anonymous sources seem to agree, saying that Nokia is indeed in the final stages of talks with Microsoft, and is "close to announcing a software partnership." These spooks also say that Google was also in the running, but is no longer favored for the job, and as such we're very likely to see Windows Phone 7 running on Nokia devices soon. We're sure you'll have some very strong opinions about that -- we had a few ourselves -- but please keep it clean in comments below!

Update: The Wall Street Journal just published a report of its own, by and large saying pretty much the same thing as BW. "If an agreement can be reached in time... Elop likely would announce the deal Friday." The report also said an executive shakeup might be in the works, with "several senior members of the executive board expected to leave." Show of hands, who all's excited for Friday's announcement?

This will be a killer deal IMO, the new WM7 looks extremely clean and uncluttered to use. Besides Nokia's build quality for hardware has been really good, my phones have taken tremendous amount of beating including a spin in the washing machine :)
