Hi friends, 3 weeks back i purchased an LG DVD writer, it was working fine but all of a sudden it is not detecting DVD ROM's, I'm neither able to read nor burn any DVD ROM's. I recently installed Vista and I have installed XP on my C drive. I installed vista from DVD ROM and as far as I remember that was the last time I was able to read a DVD ROM. In vista If I put any DVD it shows it as totally empty, in XP nothing of that sort happens but unable to read, but Im able to read CD ROMs in both the Operating systems. I can return the DVD writer and get a new one, since I bought it only recently, but before that I want to see If there is anything wrong from my side. By the way I use 600W psu and please see my signature for the rest of the configuration. Can you please share your thoughts on this.

If the device is getting detected in Device Manager, than trying upgrading the firmware. Next thing you can do is try changing the sata Data Cable, In bios verify wheather the Drive properties are in default configuration, dont modify it to UDMA5 or something.

If you have access the internet than try update drivers from properties of the device under computer mgmt.

If the drivers were updated earlier or false drivers exists than click on RollBack Drivers.

Do not do troubleshooting when under warranty . Just get it replaced. If not under warranty then you can to troubleshoot.

@VinTech - Just do me a favour. Check if you are able to boot using a windows installation disc (Any One). I have the same writer, same problems. Gets detected, but unable to play half the disc, does not boot. Just got it 2-3 days back, t was a LG OEM drive. If u have the same problem, i would recommend getting a replacement from a different brand.

@PhOeNiX's: Sure I will do as u say, and ill post tomorrow coz now Im in office. Since u r also having the same problem, I feel as if I shud not have bought LG. Tell me one thing, r u able to read CDROMs. Im able to do so. Its only DVD I'm having problems with.

^yep. I did not try a DVD though. As i was using the Drive on a Machine to be based on XP, but while trying, i did try booting with a Vista DVD to check, but did not work. The writer does not boot with any kind of media. Though it shows up in the boot screen, it just doesnt boot. I had to use the drive from my main rig to do the installation etc. Will be returning it in a day or two. I have heard only HP and LG are in stock in most places now :( So will try HP next.

LG DVD Writer certiain model has, problem with it's laser and circuit. which makes it non-repairable..

my writer also all of a sudden stopped working, so i went to a good repair shop(global technologies) here, they told after checking model number, that this model number has issue with laser, daily they get atleast 50 same drives for repair.....

Upgrading the firmwares and drivers does not void warranty buddy.
I know that buddy but why would anyone ruin the prospect of getting a new drive. Plus troubleshooting is for those drives when you just postpone buying a new drive for the next 2 -3 months. After that the drive is going to die anyways.

Although you can do a firmware flash but there are always chances that the issues may crop again within or outside warranty period.

Better get a new drive of different company.

@PhOeNiX: I tried booting from Vista dvd but it doesnt boot, I can boot with xp CD ROM.

@HellBoyX2: can u please mention the model number... I want to see if I have the same.

I tried everything but nothing seems to work, so the DVD ROM has gone kaput, so I will be going for a replacement. By the way is replacement possible only for the same model number or I can demand a different one (sorry if this sounds dumb)... Thanks for all the replies...

Will you be going to that store for replacement or directly the LG RMA center (if there is one)? If going to that store tell them that the model you have is jinxed and all people with this model have problems and you want a new one of another company.

I will be going to the shop from where I bought... I think I should not have bought LG, I went with their brand name, now I see that many are having problems with their DVD ROMS
