LG Philips LCD has won a five billion dollar order to supply liquid crystal display (LCD) screens for Hewlett-Packard, the world's second-largest personal computer maker.
The deal requires LG Philips, one of the world's largest LCD makers, to ship LCD screens for HP's laptop computers and desktop monitors from June 2005 to May 2008.
LG Philips, a joint venture between LG Electronics of South Korea and Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands, said the contract's value accounts for 62.5 percent of its sales of about eight billion dollars last year.
"This large long-term agreement further strengthens LG Philips LCD's presence in the notebook PC and monitor LCD market," it said in a statement.
HP Vice President Kirk Moul said in a statement issued here that the contract is "a key to our continuing growth in the notebook and display market by enabling a stable supply of high quality and advanced technology products."
LG Philips posted a net loss of 79 billion won (78 million dollars) in the first quarter of this year due to a fall in LCD prices and the won's appreciation against the dollar. It was the company's first quarterly net loss since 2001.
