Sure, Windows 7 will run just fine on a thick slab of screaming desktop, but what everyone's really wondering is how it'll perform on laptops, or better yet, down-market netbooks. The very same stage that put Linux into the grubby hands of the Wal-mart consumer and forced Microsoft to extend the life of XP just to stay in the game. It's all pre-beta stuff for now mind you, but Laptop loaded up its early Windows 7 build onto an Eee PC 1000H (10-inch, 1.6GHz Atom, 1GB RAM) with decent results. For the most part, it ran "pretty well" with Laptop managing to get the netbook's features working from the XP drivers supplied by ASUS. And just as Microsoft demonstrated, the relatively lightweight Microsoft OS required just 485MB of RAM when Windows 7 was fully loaded, sans applications of course. Hot. There were some problems with graphics performance as demonstrated by jumpy, 720p video playback and video conferencing over Skype. Still, pre-beta is exactly that, pre-beta. Drop a gold-release Windows 7 OS onto an Eee PC convertible touchscreen and Microsoft and ASUS might be on to something come mid 2009.

When I saw Windows 7 pics it just looked to me like a copy of the 'unnecessarily released' OS Vista

Microsoft is just running out of ideas to make money so they are releasing OSs one after the other lol. Why can't they think of something innovative like the way Apple does?

Btw...topic starter your avatar is hypnotic :P

Didn't you ever learn that never to judge a book by its cover? The case of Windows Vista and Windows 7 simply furthers the saying.

And FYI, go and check the new Windows 7 builds showcased by Microsoft at the PDC, not the Pre-beta builds offered to the PDC invitees, but the newer build. It does not look like Vista, alteast not exactly like Vista as it used to before.
Features and OS wise, it is a huge improvement over Vista, it is looking like a brilliant one.
And if you do not believe us mere mortal souls at TE, check what the press and the bloggers are saying.
And if still you are not convinced, then you are free to say whatever you want to.

Innovative? 1 click (and zero click!) window switching is innovative I'd say. I just spent a couple of hours reinstalling my box just so that I could get the new UI...

Lol, i could not understand which of the OSes were you praising

Windows 7. My point was that if you complain about a lack of innovation, Windows 7 is not the one to be complaining about....

Full disclosure - I work for MS, and prior to 7 my favorite OS was Win 2k8.

I don't know why, but I always knew that you work for Microsoft :P

OT: And now that you work for MS, I will tell you that I quite like Windows but hate the Microsoft monopoly that has been created not because MS has the best OS out there but because MS locks OEMs, governments, organizations and uses shady tactics to push its products.

Well its a company, profit is the motive, If any other company had been in its place they would have and are doing in other spaces the same thing..Besides most people here talk abt windows as an OS, keeping in mind only features and not the marketing policies..

Look at apple iPhone, they are not allowing Opera mini to be available through the appstore just cause it competes with safari.
Infact Apple is the b**ch among Companies, and thats why consumers chose microsoft over apple..

Anyway i dont get anything for microsoft, but just sharing my perspective:)

The company which locks OEMs and uses shady tactics? Why not compare with a company which sues any other makes of systems with its OS, Pulling the plug on apps for no real reason, not allowing apps competing with its own apps to be used, not letting its products to be used with any other software but its own.

Dude, Dont compare MS with the freedom of Linux, compare the scene with companies of similar nature and setup.

@ partymonger and alsiladka

So, if Apple is busy f***ing people, it gives MS right to do whatever it wants to do? I know it's business and nobody is clean, but that doesn't mean that you can't conduct yourself with some ethics. Afterall if you are like everyone else, where's the novelty.

PS: On second thought, may be I say these things because I am not a businessman.

So, friends now Microsoft going to Revamp its Vista into Windows 7.

In other words Microsoft is not willing to accept the failure of Vista, that's why a new release in such a short time.

Intel, Storage Companies i.e., Seagate, Samsung are the most benefited from the release of Vista.

If a product does not sell as expected, would you leave it and start all over again?

They are doing what is logical and smart. Vista was a major refresh with regards to the kernel and architecture.

With Win7, they are fixing all the issues which people had, and improving whatever shortcomings Vista had. And if you have been following Win7 news, you would have come to know that most of the work is being appreciated in a good way.

Personally, i had no problems with Vista, and simply cannot wait to get on with Win7.

Well I have been running windows 7 pre beta for few days now and so far I must say its impressive.

Its stable even as of now. NO crashes till date. Mind you I am running this on my home laptop to first see how it behaves. So far, everything is working just fine. The laptop is very responsive, more than vista actually. Battery life is great, programs are running just fine. All drivers were taken automatically exception of my GPU ( i have discrete gfx lappie ) and card reader.

For card reader, vista drivers worked just fine. Same was not the case with the GPU. But running windows update took care of that and now its fully functional including 3D, aero and flip.

All basic programs are running, taking about 700MB RAM ( I am using x64 version ).

Installation was basically same as vista.
