Linux Linux for Kids

Thanks friends, i have finally loaded Ubuntu 9.10 using WIn7 built in way. It eazily got installed using WIndows7 on a seperate drive.

But still i have one more query.

I am not able to configure the internet settings in it. Pls tell me where to put these settings.

I am using MTNL b.band.

So friends, i would like to ask if Windows has all the features, why would anyone like to switch to Linux other than the fact that it is free. Is there any use of Linux or something which Windows can't do?

@rohit, if you dont mind paying lots of money for windows OS then paying for applications like Office, then paying extra money for higher end PC system because windows is MUCH slower, then sure, windows is great.

on the other hand, if you want Free software (Free price and also Free meaning Freedom) which works well/faster even on lower end hardware costing you less in software prices and hardware costs too, then why not? You get the OS and also apps like OpenOffice, GIMP (Photoshop free version) you name it, you have it...

main perceived disadvantage of Linux is you need to be tech savvy to use it (like you have been asking so many questions) while Windows "just works" but I challenge you to be able to use Windows error-free and hassle-free for much longer without the need to post technical questions asking for help from others even though you have paid for the software :D

BTW I recently got Acer laptopn with Win7 and also installed Linux and it is clear to see that Win7 is much slower/sluggish compared to Linux...

Plus WIn7 came with lots of crapware/bloatware like Norton security, McAfee Antivirus, Office trial versions all scamming you and asking for more money and slowing down the system.

Ubuntu installation on that same system works super fast/smooth and I have all the apps worknig without a hitch.

I am sure you would know better that all these crapware that you mentioned are not part of the Windows OS. It is rather the laptop manufacturer who has bundled all these applications on your laptop.

Not to turn this into yet another Win vs Lin fight thread, but I do not agree to your argument that windows is slower than linux. Recently, I installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my 3 year old laptop, but GNOME lagged like hell. I'm sure KDE would have been worse. On the other hand, Windows 7, my primary OS, runs absolutely fine on my laptop. So, probably hardware compatibility is also important in determining which runs faster. And it is a given that Windows supports several thousands of hardware by different manufacturers either out of the box, or with a simple driver installation.

And regarding free softwares, you have millions of choices for windows. Paid softwares are not imposed upon anyone, and there is a free alternative to almost every paid one.

In my personal experience and opinion, Linux has better security; Windows has better hardware compatibility and of course, gaming (which is yet to evolve in Linux). Regarding ease of learning, I wouldn't comment because I am used to Windows and my opinion would be biased when I say Linux is difficult for me to adapt to.

Did you attempt to troubleshoot why it was lagging for you? Perhaps bad driver or GNOME bug consuming CPU? Did you check system monitor for cpu usage etc?

What I'm trying to say is that (I forgot to mention) I have uninstalled Norton/McAfee etc and various junkware, yet windows boots and apps load much slower than Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)... now this is a 3GB machine so cant say about RAM usage but really, do you think Windows can match Linux in RAM usage?

1) We are taught this way.In school, when a child starts learning Computers for the first time maybe in 2nd or 3rd. He is only taught about windows. I am not saying that we should completely switch but atleast students should be made aware that Windows is Operating system and Other systems like Linux exists which are free to use.perhaps should be given little exposure to them.

2) Unfair practices by Microsoft:

microsoft's evil trade practices have ensured that Linux stays out of reach of masses. they literally force windows upon you. Example,In India you can't buy a decent laptop without being forced to pay for windows license.you don't even get to pick your OS. what's worse is the hardware manufacturers like Dell and HP openly refuse to entrain warranty(on hardware) if you use different OS.

Hey, What's Happened to Freedom of Choice and our right to choose?

Even many of friends in college only learned about linux in college lol.

I think beginners should start with the *some say "overloaded"* editions of linux like Ultimate Edition 2.5 that come with a great deal more utilities than required just for the fun of it.
