Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plugins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java and other components. It also adds a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, and a web-based package installation interface. Linux Mint is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories.

Clement Lefebvre has announced the release of Linux Mint 5.0, an enhanced and user-friendly desktop Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 8.04.



MintUpdate was refactored and its memory usage was drastically reduced. On some systems the amount of RAM used by mintUpdate after a few days went from 100MB to 6MB.Mozilla also greatly improved the memory usage in Firefox between version 2 and 3 (Read more).Elyssa comes with kernel version 2.6.24 which features a brand new scheduler called CFS . The kernel scheduler is responsible for the CPU time allocated to each process.



Linux Mint 5 Elyssa is supported by CNR.com which features commercial services and applications which are not available via the traditional channels.

The Software Portal introduced in Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna is receiving more focus as it represents the easiest way to install applications. About 10 times more applications will be made available for Linux Mint 5 Elyssa.

Darky, would u recommend this over Mandriva 2008.1 Spring edition.

I installed Mandriva 2008.1 and i am not very happy with it. It jut hangs randomly....sometimes while booting and sometimes while logging in.

Well Linux Mint ships all the codecs from DVD to everything.. and you need to install few in Mandriva.. Apart from that Mandriva has better support.. Which version you arre using ? If KDE please change to Gnome :) I too faced some Log In problem !

On a quick not I would say Mandriva a much better distro >After all Mint is Ubuntu + Extra goodies :P
