Galvanizer
Techenclave was the first forum which I joined way back and i was surprised at how internet could weave a bond between like minded souls. Though I have not been an active member on the forum, not a day goes by when I don't check the recent post sections.

So I would like to steer away the discussions from gadgets, watches, politics, Being smart's queries :p etc to the ride which I completed when I was a student in 2010. I hope you will get a jist of what I experienced.

Prateek, kahin chalte hai!!” This is what I blurted out while we were listening to some instrumental song at our hostel room in month of Feb 2010.

AND THIS IS WHERE IT ALL STARTED!!

My love affair with the biking started when I rode unicorn (Will be referred to as UNI hence forward) in 2007 (No one can make engines like HONDA. Period) Fast forward to Dec 2008, and I got a Honda Stunner (Saphira aka Saph) as a gift from my parents. And Boy, I did ride her day and night to Amritsar, Jammu, Chandigarh, Karnal, Kurukshetra etc within a year.

But there was always an itch, of pushing myself to the max, bonding with the machine to become one and to make it to the top.

And that opening sentence gave way to that dream.

1_zps2f8c6669.jpg

Dream of riding in unknown and challenging terrain.

2_zps59a693bc.jpg

Dream of absorbing the sun, the peaks, the lake, the nature and the peace.

3_zps7b94f9be.jpg

Dream of exploring and meeting new creatures.

Dream of finding my inner self.

To be cont.
@Mods : I just wanted to share this log with TE family. I hope that I am not overriding any kind of rules. If yes, please let me know and I will take this down.

The Seed

With that opening sentence I and prateek got down to searching for the destination.

Mcleaodgunj ?? Already visited but not on bike. (A moment’s thought) Naaaaah

Rajhasthan ?? Naaah

Uttaranchal ?? Naaah

Manali ?? Naaaaah

Rohtank ?? Naaaah

Hell Yess !! This is what we wanted to do.

Conquer the World’s highest motorable road.

We communicated this to our fellow riders and told them that we are going to Leh. And with that started months of sleepless nights, tons of discussion, reading up forums for the route and the preparation tips. During this time I contacted a person through public forums and he provided us with the maps which I have attached.

There were a total of 6 riders and hence we thought of taking 2 bikes solo and 2 with pillion. The rides decided were :

Honda stunner ( Saph)
Unicorn (Uni)
Apache 150 (Jia)
FZ-16

And mind you this trip was not yet communicated at home by any of us.

After I had all the information at my hand. I started the most important part : budgeting.
indian-rupee-symbol.gif
indian-rupee-symbol.gif

After reading many travellogues I made a rough calculation and asked everyone to pitch in 10k. (hence a total of 60k.) All agreed to this and hence this matter was put to rest for now.

The excitement was so much that even during the final semester exams I and prateek used to take a 10 minutes break after every 15 minutes of study to discuss about our forthcoming trip.

We used to dance and clap and grin like a small boy who gets his first hotwheels car.
grin.gif

So on 2nd of july exams got over. And we came back to delhi to break this newsflash to our family.

Let me post the exact conversation :

Me : Mum-dad I wanted to tell you something.

Mum (Watching TV) : Kya hua ?? (what happened )

Me : Nothing much. Was just thinking that I am already placed and my joining date is far off so I should do something. ( This is the buttering phase where you coax the parents that you deserve something big after so much toiling (masti) at the college for 4 years )

Mum : Hmm. You are right !! you should join some course so that you are prepared when you join the company.

I was like
icon_eek.gif
icon_surprised.gif
.

Meanwhile Dad and I exchanged a glimpse and he gave a small grin as he understood I was going to ask for something else. ( He knows about my passion for biking and understands me better in such circumstances )

Me : Yes you are right and I should do that but those courses start sometime later and I was thinking of something else. (Damage repair phase where you have to get them back on the track, no matter what it takes )

Mum : Hmm. (Watching TV)

Damn those Saas – bahu serials !!

Me : Ok then I will talk to you later. ( Containment phase : Where you have given a hint to the parents and then have receded back so that parents have this thing at the back of their mind and when I will tell them about my plan they wont be taken aback. Think of this is preparation phase for newsflash)

After couple of days :

Me : Mumma, You remember I told you that I was planning for something.

Mum : Yes. I do. So you must be planning a bike ride to Ambala again ?? (I had been to my college on my bike couple of times and she knew how much I love it. Hence the remark)

(Successful execution of containment phase
icon_twisted.gif
)

Me : Yes Yes. I wanted to ride there but this time just a bit further.

Dad : Chandigarh Jana hai ??

Me : Hanji. Bas thoda sa aage aur hai. (Just a bit more further) ( My voice was waivering at this moment. No matter how much you prepare you always go through this)

Mum : Seedha – seedha bata kahan jana hai. (Tell me where you want to go)

Me : LADAKH ( Fingers crossed at the back ) ( Nuclear drop – off phase )
.
.
.
.
Mum totally silent and Dad smiling a bit. (Green signal from dad 20% work done now 80% remaining)
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Mum : Are you mad ?? Do you know what are you saying @#$@!@$%*&#)@* ………….. ( Typical lecture which was expected as she cares for me. )

YOU ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE ON BIKE.

I was shattered after hearing this but I regained my courage like a soldier and made up my mind to march towards border again to fight for my freedom.

After couple of hours :

ME : Mumma, please. It’s my last bike trip (of course not) and I want to ….blah blah ( All those silly reasoning and words along with wide puppy eyes with a hint of tears )

Finally after whole day of persuasion Mum agreed.

Wooaaah !! Mission Accomplished.

Called Prateek and others and told them about my green signal from home. Asked about their status and everyone said the work is in progress.

Dozed off to bed thinking of smooth tarmac, curvy roads, peaks, cool air and all. Little did I know that I would have to face the following too :

The preparation

Well after the official clearances from my home I got 10k for the expenses. Called up prateek and told him that we have initial amount for buying essential things.
Reached Karol bagh market and then hunted for riding gears. At last found a shop within our budget and bought following :

1. Knee pads & elbow pads : 6 nos. @ 450 each.
2. Bunjee cords : 6 nos. @ 60 each.
3. We looked for riding glasses but they were a minimum of 200 – 300 so we bought the glasses with strap which are used at construction sites : 6 nos. @ 60 each.

This whole ordeal took half of our day. Then we headed to pallika bazar and procured following :

1. Rain coats cum pants : 6 nos. @ 400 each.
2. Socks : 20 pairs @ 20 each.

And you know how much efforts are spent at pallika bazar. No no, I am not talking about the traffic, but about the bargaining. You get a quote of 1600 and you have to drag it to 400 and it takes multiple visit to same shop, making faces, haggling and what not.

Mind you : Pallika bazar is not for faint hearted persons

So we spent ~6500 including some medical supplies and miscellaneous.

Next day I, prateek, Nitin and Manish left for ambala as our meeting point.

Cost of reaching ambala – 1000.

On reaching ambala we assembled at a friends flat and this is how the conversation goes :

ME : So guys, I got 10k from home and we bought the riding gears ( Yay !! ). I am left with approx. 2k. So whoever has brought cash let me know so that we can pool it and then keep a note of it. ( I took out small diary to account for budgets)

A silence

..

.

Manish : I have 3 – 4k.

Nitin : 1 – 2k

Rishabh : 2 – 3k.

Shashank : 3 – 4k.

Prateek : (Smiling) 2 – 3k. But will manage later.

I was like wtf.
eek.png

How can we reach leh on such meagre balance. And then I came to know the most important thing

“No one had told that they are going to leh. Some said that they are going to visit a friends function at jammu and some said that they are going to manali.”

Then came another shocker : The FZ which was earlier planned got cancelled due to commitment issues of the owner. Then we started the search for another bike a day before a trip to ladakh.

Rishabh being a local pulled some strings and called us and told most probably a bull (Electra) has been arranged. We looked at each other and then started debating that who will ride it.

Since I had the maximum experience of riding a bull ( A strech of 4 kms when I had to take a friend to a clinic and I almost sprained my ankle while stopping it thanks to almost 0 rear brakes and the reverse placement of brakes and gear ), it was decided I will ride it.

While I was preparing myself for the ultimate ordeal of riding a bike with which I am highly uncomfortable to Leh, we got a call from Rishabh " The electra is cancelled and I am searching for more. I will reach flat at evening with a bike."

I breath a sigh of relief and the wait started for Rishabh.

What’s done is done and we left for our old trusted neetu bhaiya (Mechanic) for servicing our steeds.

There we came to know that Saph needs a clutch plate change, accelerator wire change and Uni needs clutch wire replacement etc.

So at the end including the cost of service (Saph, Uni and Jia) , consulmables ( for the steeds and us too:grin
smile.png
and the spares (Extra wires, spark plugs etc) we were looking at a bill of 3k.

Also got this pressure gauge for 250 bucks.

IMG_4388_zps6eeed904.jpg

We came back at flat and started packing things.

Finally Rishabh arrived and he did arrive in style on his own bike which we never considered for this trip. Any guesses which bike he got for the ride ??

Anyone ??

Cm'on ??

Not yet ??

Yes a SPLENDOR !!

We were dejected, excited, happy, perplexed and content all at a single moment and reasons for such a mix of emotions were obvious. Atlast we got a bike but a bike which is at the lowest level of the food chain.

While we were thinking that pushing our 125 - 150 ccs bike to such terrain would be difficult we dared not to think what lie ahead with this.

The fact that the bike was serviced couple of days ago relieved our nerves to some extent.

And we named her "Mini Bult"

Trip has not started and we are down with approx. 11k.

We reached the flat at night and then packed the 2 ruk sacks and other bagpacks with all the necessities.

Shashank then tied the big ruk sacks to Saph and Mini Bult wilt bunjee cords. Meanwhile Nitin brought a base ball bat stating that we would require it for our safety (Maybe
confused.png
) and we grinned and accomodated it too.

Had dinner, chatted for a long time and then I said “Jai Mata Di” to myself and retired to bed.

The Cast

So what is a movie without heroes. Hence let me introduce to you the rides and the riders

1. Prateek : Rider no. 1 – Saph - The vagabound and a shooter. There is always a person in a group who pushes the whole
group into the insanity and he is the one. Doesn’t step out without a cam and shades.

p_zps9ac82aeb.jpg

2. Nitin : Rider no. 2 – Jia - The munim (whose finances were toppled) and the innovative mind of the group. Always ahead in
trying new dishes and making up insane combinations.

Nitin_A_zpsaa7eed8b.jpg

3. Manish : Pillion – Jia - Our prince charming. Always ready to strike a pose in front of camera. The tanker of our group (you
know what I am talking about).

Mangal1_zps3b7dc1e8.jpg

4. Rishabh : Rider no. 3 – Mini Bult - Punjab da puttar. Lassi aur aloo ke paranthe can be gulped down by him in a jiffy, and I
am not talking about just a couple of paranthas. I hope you get the drift.

Rishabh_zps3a89721d.jpg

5. Shashank : Pillion – Uni - The mechanchi. Our go to guy for any jugaad. Was in charge of all the luggage packing and
securing them on the bikes during the whole trip and he did a great job at that.

Batlu_zps6d1b2e76.jpg

6. Yours truly : Rider no. 4 – Uni – The dreamer. Enough said.

Nitin_zps77e7015d.jpg

You have already witnessed the Mini Bult following are the rest :

The Dawn

We all woke up early morning with heart full of excitement and tended to our natural business.

Post that wore our gears along with the riding glasses. We were not able to understand how to secure the glasses but after a couple of tries we got it that the strap should be worn over the helmet so that glasses stay in place.

Came out and purred our bikes to life.

It was still early morning and I am sure neighbours around would have been irritated by all the khat-pat that we were making (If they were awake
grin.gif
).

Pre-ride preparations.

A biker does not just sits on the saddle and zoom away. He prepares himself for the day ahead, sorts out million thoughts going in his mind and then focus on only one thing, the RIDE AHEAD. This may sound bit over the top but everyone goes through this phase and it's important to master it as it makes a difference of paying for the beer or at the clinic at the end of the day.

I had already told everyone about the riding positions and the warning signs to be used on the highway in different scenarios. Still, re-iterated everything and bored them for 10-15 minutes.

Got on our bikes, dropped the gears and started the journey which shall be engraved in our memory till we die.

Just after riding 3 – 4 kms within the city Prateek signalled me to come over.
He showed be that the handle of Saph was wobbling too much and it was pretty uncomfortable to control the bike.

Not willing to take any chances stopped as soon as we got on the highway and called our mech – Neetu bhaiya.

IMG_4202_zpsd530e75d.jpg

Waiting for Neetu Bhaiya.

IMG_4207_zps5147a010.jpg

Prateek taking out the pressure gauge to check the tyres. We just loved doing it
icon_biggrin.gif

After half an hour he arrived and took a test drive. Came back laughing and then said that it is due to heavy weight at the rear of the bike. So Prateek needs to keep the weight on the handle bar to control the bike.

But during his TD he dropped his phone and even after searching for sometime we couldn’t find it. We felt guilty because it was for us that he came over. However, he waived it off smiling and bid us goodbye.

I am sometimes not able to comprehend as to how the bonds between the humans weave through a common interest even though they do not share the blood running in their veins or spend a lot of time together.

This man whom we just know for an year and meet just couple of times a day left everything aside and came to our help for a reason which was plain stupid. In the process he incurred a loss which he has to cover by working day and night but still waves us smiling and good wishes in his heart.

A salute to all the people in this world who make us feel that goodness has not left the mankind.

The ride was amazing. Cool air, greenery all around and great tarmac just made it more enjoyable. We were cruising at the speeds of 70-75 kmph.

IMG_4259_zps8af2dd58.jpg

This red bag was carried through out the journey in the similar fashion and everyone who sat as pillion dreaded to carry this bag.Thank God I was not a pillion at any point of time
grin.gif

Just to break the monotony we used to shuffle the riding positions but majority of the time the riding positions were same as described above.

IMG_0779_zpsce904c0f.jpg

Notice how the trees merge at the top. Purely magical as if mother nature has herself crafted this.

Such roads and good company just puts you in a zone where you hope that it does not end. But aisa kya kabhi hota hai ??

Never

My father always teaches me that after a bad time always come a good time but you learn with experience that after good time bad time comes again.
icon_mad.gif

And the experience was not far away !!

I was chatting with shashank and suddenly Uni’s rear tyre burst – yes BURST with a loud pop at the speed of 75 – 80 on a single lane highway. For a moment I felt that bike is running on the rims only. I don’t know how but I controlled it somehow and stopped at the roadside.

Informed the front riders by our pre-decided signal ( using horn in following sequence – pee – pee – pee – pee – pee – A pause and then repeat
icon_cool.gif
).

They turned around we inspected the tyre. There was a large puncture which was definitely abnormal. We took the bike to the roadside puncture walla just 10 metres ahead. ( Thank God !! Atleast he does listen to our prayers )

He inspected it and said that the tube is gone due to such a large abrasion and this is due to the tyre which is almost the end of it’s life.
icon_eek.gif
( I knew that Uni's tyre was a bit old but I had thought that it will take us through Leh. And 1 more ad hoc expense. )

Tyre_zps6dca0bc9.png

Maestro at his work.

IMG_4248_zpsd8c9a4ff.jpg

Time for a photo shoot
icon_razz.gif
.

We asked him to somehow repair the tube as he didn’t have any spare. He had to use the patch which is used to repair the tube of tractor tyres. Paid him off and got back on the road.

While riding I was feeling a small bump with every rotation of the rear wheel however, it was not which was pestering my mind. All I was speculating was : are we even going to make it to leh will all these issues and rising costs.

I was sure that the tyre would cost around 1500 and it would not just imbalance but topple our already dwindling budget.

All I could hope for was that prateek would manage some money at later stage.

Somehow reached Kiratpur and started looking for tyre dealer in the city. Upon finding the dealer checked out some tyres and everyone started suggesting a wider tyre for better grip uphills.

After some thinking, I stuck with the stock tyre size as I didn’t want to change anything in the ride quality as I was pretty much at ease with it.

Paid up 1800. (God knows who will we feed later on – our bikes or our bellies)

Had breakfast in the city and zipped around to merge with highway towards manali.

IMG_0846_zps4b73064b.jpg

The weather Gods were gracious as the sun as well as clouds were playing hide and seek and it resulted in perfect riding conditions.

IMG_0840_zpscee1a9cd.jpg

A regular sight on single lane highways.

Reached a particular stretch where Beas river was parallel to the road. I guess Sundernagar. There we saw 2 riders taking a break in full gears and cramster colt on their FZ and Electra sharing a smoke. We were just awed by them. We waved to them and they waived back to us.
001_smile.gif

( I thought to myself that I will come like this to leh again later when I will start earning !! )

After a short break resumed our journey.

A temple within the nature's lap.

The sun had called it a day and as we were approaching manali we were feeling the chill in the air and it just made us more cheerful.

IMG_0850_zpse161ea57.jpg

IMG_0881_zps382d0eca.jpg

Riding on the those twisties at dusk with just a couple of car’s in the sight was signalling us that things are yet to come.

Finally reached the busy streets of Manali.

Parked our bikes and Nitin and Rishabh went around enquiring for hotels. Found a single room where all 6 of us could stay.
Took our luggage to the room washed our faces and went again to the market for dinner.

IMG_4302_zps841ffa06.jpg

Appetizers
icon_razz.gif
. Bread pakoras and tea.

At night somehow 6 of us adjusted on 1 double bed and dozed off.

The first Chill - Part 1

This was the day when we will actually start the trip. What lies ahead is a total mystery and I was really looking forward to it.

IMG_4445_1024x768_zpsd08356c6.jpg

Leh, Here we come

"Nitin, Manish !! Wake up. It’s getting late. Utho saalo @#$#@#$*& ……… "

( And this went on every morning till the last day of our trip. There are some people who are lazy and then there are some who are Manish  )

IMG_4315_1024x768_zpse2230eb8.jpg

Nitin still not willing to leave the hotel :p

IMG_1345_1024x768_zpsd6697a3e.jpg

Manali waking up.

Anyhow everyone got ready, checked out and secured the luggage on the bikes. Post that tripod was set, poses were flaunted and then pictures were clicked.

Finally Shashank gets to ride.

Reached a nukkad wala for the morning chai and breakfast (Omelette).

Want some ??

Meanwhile Prateek called his home and told his parents that his trip has extended and he is going to Rohtank. (This is known as Zor ka jhatka dheere se dena – Part 1). He told me that his dad will deposit money by the end of the day. I was relieved.

My parents had given me a postpaid Dolphin SIM because during my research I had found out that BSNL has best networks ( if any ) during the ride to leh. Also we needed at least 1 postpaid number so that we can be in touch with our family so I switched the SIM.

Post the breakfast started the ride to Rohtang. In between came across the riverside and masti creeped in everyone. We parked the bikes and went to the riverside.

The cold water was really refreshing and we all enjoyed a lot.

A look at watch made me realize we are behind schedule and then we resumed our journey.

The roads were amazing and so was the scenery. Mountains looked so beautiful. I and rishabh were chatting along and were living the moment.

As we were climbing the fog was welcoming us with a great hug. The temperature began to fall and the excitement kept on rising.

IMG_4389_1024x768_zpse9c0aba7.jpg

The cleaning of this landslide ate up lot of time.

IMG_1511_1024x768_zpsd5da0d49.jpg

At the rohtank top the crowd was huge. Lot of cars and bikes could be seen.

IMG_1471_1024x768_zps78289634.jpg

Slowly and steadily the chilly air was accumulating on us as a frost and the visibility was deteriorating. We decided to wear our local rain coats to stay dry.

IMG_4497_1024x768_zps901beace.jpg

Frost accumulating on my eyelashes.

IMG_1536_1024x768_zps9a3c5ad5.jpg

Gearing up.

There were lot of restaurants but we knew that we cant afford them and hence moved on.

IMG_1463_1024x768_zpsa97683aa.jpg

We were really tempted to have food there but maybe next time.

However after some kms we found a bhutta wala on the road side. So we stopped for our lunch :D.

IMG_4485_1024x768_zps82a4fbc7.jpg

Chef of the day : Bhutta wala bhaiya. :)

IMG_4484_1024x768_zps0805f1fd.jpg

Bought 3 bhuttas and finished them in a jiffy. Everyone looked at me and prateek and then we bought 2 more.

IMG_4477_1024x768_zps6572283c.jpg

Meanwhile we saw a bulleter was stuck in the mud and his wife was standing beside him looking concerned. Couple of us went ahead in the mud and started to push the bike. Finally we got it free and he zoomed along with his wife.

And here is when we realised that things are going to get tough now due to the poor conditions of the road. I don’t think they could be called road because all we could see was soil, slush and more water. The traffic was at standstill but being on bike helped us to dart through snail pace traffic.

IMG_1515_1024x768_zps6d11da41.jpg

A snapshot of the road.

During this movement we came across a platoon of Indian army truck. Somehow at the turns first 3 bikes could cross them.

But I was left behind. It was getting irritating riding behind the trucks as we were short on time and riding so slow on the much was really difficult.

So I made up my mind and overtook that truck on that wet road. I still remember that scenario. The half of the rear tyre was dangling in the air and half of it was on the slushy road. Shashank grabbed his nails on my shoulder saying “Bhaskar sir dhyan se bhaskar sir dhyan se !!”. I told him to let go of my shoulder else I will beat him if we were to fall and survive.
