I ran HD Tune Pro on my C: drive. It showed one 'red'. Bad partition. I want to lock this sector, so it is never written upon. I did a vanilla right-click>>>properties>>>tools>>>check now.

Is this enough to lock it, or should I use some other utility. Any suggestion..?

I think if its red means then its locked. Formatting will mark/lock bad sectors. But HD tune also must do it i think. If the HDD is not under warrantty try HDD regenerator which fixes (removes) bad sectors if its a logical bad sector

what about using the hdd manufacturer's software? usually a bad sector is just remapped to one of those extra sectors given on the hdd. it does not go away.

^^

It is an old Seagate. For sure out of warranty. Like 6-7 years. Do not even remember where I picked it from. What tool else should I try. Would the M$ chkdsk lock that bad sector..? What tool is good.?

Full format should lock that alone bad sector. HDD Regenerator would help in recovering but takes long time like 6-7 hours. Don't forget to backup data in the first place.
