PC Peripherals Looking for a Basic UPS for 4yr old machine

Hi All,

I have a 4yr old AMD powered rig. Till now I have been running it without UPS as I have been getting clean power till now. But now things are changing. constant voltage fluctuations and low voltage, sometimes it reach so low that even Tube light fail to start. stupid electricity dept:mad:

Now I fear that I might fry up my PC:no:

So I am looking for a very basic UPS which can handle voltage fluctuations and supply clean power to machine.I need a reliable product which has big warranty. budget wise I don't want to spend do much as its a old rig and after it dies I would be buying a Lappy. so UPS would go unused.

I am currently looking for UPS below 2k which are locally available. heard, APC is good but local vendors say its failure rate is high and their service is not good in this area. so they advise against it. Plus, APC is costly compared to other brands. what you say? I am looking at Mirotek,Numeric or maybe APC(other please suggest)

Machine Specs:

Amd Athlon 64 3000+ based

17" inch CRT monitor

300W PSU

Dlink Modem/router

I calculated power usage with eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite v2.5. it came out to be 214W. I think any basic UPS would be able to handle it.

Please make some recommendations with exact model no according to my usage ;)

Thanks

Are these brands locally available and have service centers? Its really a pain getting these bulky bricks shipped from outside and then shipping them back for service(incase).

Hey,
Here are a few quick tips with buying UPSs. Don't bother with the power regulator, for the same money you might as well buy a line interactive UPS. You can double functionality.

APC makes great UPSs, that's why they're the biggest out there. Stay away from crappy cheappy brands, they're nothing but trouble. The reason you don't hear about the failures of the cheap ones, is because very few people use them and discuss them.

Buy a UPS that outputs a sine wave, they're better no matter what anyone says. Buy a line interactive ups, as they regulate power rather than just being a battery with an inverter.

I would recommend something like the APC Smart-UPS 700. The 700 has 450W of power, outputs a sine wave and regulates power to make sure your unit doesn't burn out.

Take a look at your local classifieds online, you might be able to pick up one of these fairly cheap from an office that's closing down or from someone upgrading. Even if you buy it very cheap with dead batteries, the batteries it uses are locally available mostly everywhere and you can replace them yourself.
Finally, with UPSs, you get what you pay for. Don't get stuck buying scrap metal that you'll need to replace every two months!
Good luck,
Tony

Yes, these are locally available and have service centres, atleast here in Pune.

Why don't you go and ask your dealer ?
