I am looking for a NAS Device, my requirements are:

1. User Swappable/ Serviceable Drives - 2.5/ 3.5" both are OK.

2. Support for RAID 1

3. Ethernet Connectivity

Wifi Connectivity is good to have, but not mandatory. The above 3 are my must have points, I am not able to get any good options in the Market as I am looking for Warranty & Support for the NAS also.

Budget - Not an Issue.

Looking for the suggestions from TE-ites.

Also would like an opinion from users if a SFF PC/ HTIB type PC would be better than a NAS.

I'm not sure.

Getting a small and frugal (power-wise) board with more than 2 SATA ports is a challenging enough task. There is a tower case for about 2.8k that will take 3 drives but most mini-ITX boards will have only 2 SATA ports. The ones that do have more are fairly expensive - 8k+, and are meant for more demanding applications.

I'm also debating the same questions. It seems I have two backups of all my data, I can save about 3TB of space by migrating downward to a shared NAS with 1 backup. Powering the NAS is one challenge as I live in Gurgaon, and the second challenge is finding a reasonably priced solution. It shouldn't be that tough.

I have already considered PCI/ PCIE SATA Expansion Cards with a Riser Card in between. As I will be on a 10/100/ Wifi N Network only, i wont need very high speeds. 100Mbps will be available to me any time. My main criteria is thus Raid 1.

@cranky: Try looking for this board. Newegg.com - H67M-ITX/HT LGA 1155 Intel H67 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard

However with this + sandy bridge proccy the overall cost may shoot through the roof. Why I suggested this board is WRT you mentioning power frugality. Jeff 'Codinghorror' Atwood was able to do away with a mere 17watt on a Pico psu adaptor and 22 watt on a normal PSU.

@axeman: With current prices of 2TB disks and other h/w it is a tempting idea to build one box running freeNAS. I am feeling this urge too as my trusty ol' Linksys NAS200 is not enough anymore.

I'm not sure whether this would work *yet* but I am planning to setup one with a 4 Bay eSata Enclosure like this combined with a Seagate GoFlex Net. It has two SATA ports and you can easily run debian on it. 1.2 Ghz Processor and 128 MB RAM.

I already tried it with a similar GuruPlug+ based on the Marvell Kirkwood processor just like the GoFlex Net and everything seemed to work. GoFlex Net can be purchased from eBay.com for about $50.

Anyway will update the actual status once I get some time to configure it (Exams now! :( :()

Sure thing:

Prime ABGB is the culprit

Netgear NAS Ready Duo 2 Bay - SRP 12000

2 TB Seagate Drives x 2 - SRP 4100 x 2

Runs SSH, Transmission, PHP already :P

Yes, check the addons section in the readynas forums. they should give you a good idea of commonly used plugins.
