LONDON: British police said Saturday they had arrested a man on suspicion on conspiracy to defraud bookmakers following newspaper allegations of match-fixing in the ongoing cricket Test between England and Pakistan.

The News of the World alleged that some members of the Pakistan team were involved in a scam in the fourth and final Test at Lord's.

"Following information received from the News of the World we have arrested a 35-year old man on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers," a spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police said.

News of the World, Britain's biggest-selling newspaper, alleged that two Pakistan bowlers delivered three blatant no-balls.

The weekly tabloid said it gave 150,000 pounds ($230,000, 185,000 euros) to a middle man who correctly told them in advance precisely when the deliveries would be bowled.

The newspaper published images and dialogue from the encounter and a picture of what it said was one of the promised no-balls on Friday.

It also ran a photograph of Pakistan captain Salman Butt standing with the man they claimed was the middleman, and one of their reporters.

Pakistan's team manager Yawar Saeed told Sky News television the allegations were being investigated.

He was cited as saying that none of his players had been arrested and the Test would continue Sunday as planned.

The newspaper claimed they had posed as front men for an Asian gambling cartel, paying 10,000 pounds to the alleged fixer as an upfront deposit.

They met again on Wednesday in a west London hotel room to hand over the rest of the money as their "entry ticket" into what they claimed was a "huge betting syndicate".

They claimed the middle man then correctly predicted when the no-balls would be bowled.

Pakistan collapsed spectacularly yet again in the series as England closed in on an innings victory on Saturday.

At stumps, Pakistan, following-on, were 41 for four in their second innings, having been made to follow-on after they were dismissed for just 74 first time around.

That left them still 331 runs adrift of England's first innings 446 as the home team eyed a victory that would give them a 3-1 win in their last series before they begin the defence of the Ashes in Australia in November.

The Whistle Blower: The News of The world

Damn!

The no balls were bowled precisely as suggested by the man in dock.

This seems to be the biggest evidence yet in Cricket match fixing, and i believe Pakistani team is gone this time.

The tout also mentions about having links with an Indian.

Just hoping that it isnt a player.

This entire Sub-Continent is into MATCH FIXING.

now patriotism aside, whenever India plays any other team, i always bet on India lose with my friends & 95% of times i have won, also yesterday i had bet on lanka winning the cup before the tournament started.

@^^

Which obviously is the most preferred way of life for most of the 'smart' crooks in our beloved country. Smart enough to get into the big picture and make money for themselves, but clueless about what to do for the country.

Pakis are unprofessional and they get caught every year. Indians on the other hand are very sleek by asian standards ... here nobody raises a finger.... IPL betting goes into billions of dollars ... all this 150k ... 850k are chiller in India...

..................................................

BCCI's Pawar, Srinivasan etc are all invisible stake holders in IPL teams...and moreover what makes you think that Pawar is into BCCI for the love of the game????

Pawar is one of the most corrupt political leaders in India and BCCI is a goldmine to mint money....put two and two together...

Doesn't surprise me. Did anybody think match fixing had ended? Remember what happened to Hansie Cronje and Bob Woolmer?

I feel this specific incident would classify more as spot fixing than match fixing. The players didn't under perform as such and in fact Md. Aamir (one of the accused) had a very, very successful match and also became the most successful 18-year-old bowler in this match. Regardless, everyone involved should face exemplary punishment.

Also, the Indian mentioned is the bookie not a player. And that there are bookies in India who would be trying to get access to these sort of things would of course be no secret. Call me too optimistic but I really do not think that any Indian player will be involved in any way, be it spot fixing or match fixing. The stakes are just too high for them. Yes, there is a lot of money in it but I believe now there is a lot more money in cricket legally in the longer run with all the endorsements and especially now the IPL. The stakes are just too high for anybody to even consider such short cuts. For Pakistani players one can understand, no international team is visiting their country, their economy is in the doldrums, their IPL careers are very uncertain, and then they look around players all over the world are really minting money, so one can understand some of them thinking in these lines. But this incident should be taken as a great opportunity to demonstrate to one and all that you cannot get away with all this.

this is a big shame , its happening again n again involving pakistani team , imo not just the players involved should be banned but also the entire pakistani team should be banned for participating in ICC official tourmanents alltogether for a period of some years,

it shud be give a stern message to all the budding pakistani cricketers , not do such things ever , real shame

I think if a sting says pakis not fixed a match than its news .This is old stuff.

Regarding India for the first time i think how much jealousy is their in Indian camp.

Saurab tiwari wasnt given a chance to prove .Friends says if he goes big Dhoni will loose all his ad revenues. Its obvious after marriage already his TRP is down and he still prmoting those dumbos(sharma and jadeja)

How does it matter anyway. They will be handed indefinite bans and when Pakistan lose a couple of matches miserably, they will recall each and every one of them. I have lost count of the times Mohammad Yousuf has retired.. They also lifted the ban placed on Younis Khan but I guess he chose not to play. It seems Afridi retired because he was aware of all these happenings and didn't want to get caught in the same..

People are exaggerating and overdramatizing this. My dad's been following this news since it broke. The Lords test was NOT fixed, only spot fixing was done - the 3 no balls. No England players were involved. The fixer wanted Salman Butt to win this as Captain so he could replace Afridi as permanent Captain so he and the fixer could do more deals in the future but the fact is Pak sucks so much they couldn't even come close to winning, lmao. Other games might have been fixed though but the outcome of the Lords test was 100% genuine, otherwise the game would have been abandoned.

To some people above, just because Azhar and Jadeja did that stuff 10 years ago doesn't mean every weird action you see in a game is match fixing, that's the typical lalu ch**tiya mentality, every sport has had its share of fixing scandals and other kinds of scandals (steroid users in MLB, fixing in NBA). India has been clean since Ganguly was appointed Captain. IPL controversy was all about Lalit Modi, all fixing rumors have been completely debunked and the rumors traced back to tabloid reporting in the first place. If Azharuddin and A Jadeja have done permanent damage for you, don't watch the sport in the first place if you're just going to go finger pointing "fix this fix that".

yes params but if the guy can deliver 3 no balls for money that means he controls it , he goes on to talk about how previous tests were then fixed as results , so this is not a sport , it is actually WWE except the bookies control it and you did not know about it, it is not over dramatizing it , some bits of murkiness is finally coming to light
