sarbajit_de said:Hello Everybody,
I have always been looking forward to having this special extended version of the trilogy of the GREAT FILM of EPIC proportions. However I was undecided of how to go about doing this as AMAZON.com did not ship to India. I was looking at other options like sendit.com etc etc. So when I saw one Huge hoarding about The LOTR trilogy special extended editions available as a 12 DVD box set in India now I was like Oh My God....so finally Then I started doing my research on it before to get to know how it was compared to the one released by New Line Home Entertainment. So it was from Eagle India huh? Well to be honest earlier when I had seen the ad on the hoardings I was under the impression that it had been directly imported from New Line hmm so it was not. So I did intensive research about this product from several websites including this and price of 2k for 12 DVD worth of LOTR along with that awesome 70 inch wide LOTR ROTK poster and carry bag was just too very tempting for me. Also there was an assured DVD gift worth Rs.499 as they were claiming it to be. I thought so well the stuff might be a DVD remastered by Eagle from the one presented by New Line but the content which is 12 DVDs worth would be the same. And also they were presenting it with Dolby Digital EX 5.1 as well as DTS ES 6.1 so I couldnt resist it anymore. I asked the main salesperson at Planet M where there would be any difference in quality in the New Line version and this Eagle version and he confidently said that even though it was being distributed in India and is their product the quality would be the same as they have obtained the license from New Line and that the later would definitely make sure that if their material is being reproduced somewhere else by some other company then they better be faithful to the quality.
So now there was no turning back and I went for it. I was carefully checked to make sure I had all the other goodies which included the awesome poster and an cool LOTR carry bag and the lucky draw coupons. I just couldnt wait for slipping the first disc in my home theatre. Well as far as the packaging of this box set goes I would say its in the same format , shape and design as the one which is from New Line but the quality could have been better. However no complains about it. Its got the feel of three hard bound novels inside a hard cover box. The design is pretty neat I would say. I saw that they had the DVD covers and the box had the details of what were covered on the 4 discs for each film and there were the logo from pretty well known brands like Apple TV, Starbucks coffe , New Line entertainment so I thought cmon hey if such biggies have been associated with this release so Eagle cant go to wrong with it as far as being faithful in reproducing the audio and video quality.
So in went the disc 1 of LOTR FOTR into my home theatre and was presented with a neat introduction about the DVD and stuff. Good news there no annoying Eagle Ad with stupid music but there is a short 30 secs ad of a TV show by the name Now Running from CNBC TV18 which I feel was not necessary when people are set to watch a feature like LOTR Special Extended Edition. The DVD Menu was pretty elegant and looking at the way its designed I felt its the same as that available from New Line. Double checked and assured myself that both Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and the DTS ES 6.1 were present. I have a 5.1 Philips Home Theatre set up with DTS decoding and the it was mentioned that the DTS ES 6.1 was fully compatible with DTS 5.1 decoders as well so I chose that a first option. Now I dont know whether Eagle Home Entertainment have had made great advancements in their remastering or reproducing infrastructure or not but the quality was REALLY GOOD. I would say excellent.
Video Quality:
Now I have my Philips HTS connected to my 29 inch Samsung 100Hz CRT HDTV through component and believe me the picture quality was an absolute stunner for a standard definition DVD. Now I think I have already raised my bar for video quality as far as the visual excellence is concerned by watching too much High Definition video(720p/1080i/1080p) stuff because what has happened now is that whenever I watch any video my eyes are always looking out for that extra high amount of details, richer color, awesome contrast which is associated with HD stuff , 720p and beyond. So I cant really compare this and I shouldn't be comparing it with HD stuff but believe me THE VIDEO QUALITY is really awesome , in fact one of the best I have seen so far on standard edition DVDs. The color is a lil enhanced I felt when we are taken through Shire but throughout it maintains a very good tone and it was very difficult to make out any jagged edges. The contrast was pretty good and the sharpness was also natural. So overall I would say if you have the right equipment the video quality that you will be presented it will be one of the best if not the best that you would ever experience of a standard edition DVD.
Audio Quality:
Well as I said earlier I chose the DTS ES 6.1 track as it was backward compatible with my DTS 5.1 decoder on my HTS. It was pretty much awesome I would say with a very good separation and distribution between all the 5 speakers. It was crystal clear but the voice coming out of the center speaker sounded a lil mild so I switched to the Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track using the audio button on the remote and My Oh My.... what in the world.... ??? Believe me guys it was a heightened experience. Normally I don't know how it is possible but the DD 5.1 EX track seems to a lot louder and more spatial than the DTS ES 6.1 track with the bass nearly shaking the whole room even at half the volume. I mean if the DTS ES 6.1 track on these is very good , clear and awesome then I would say the Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track SIMPLY ROCKS, and it just blew me away. Its very difficult to explain and describe the sound field that was created in my living room and believe me I truly fell in love with my Philips Home Theatre system all over again after listening to this DD 5.1 EX track. Now please dont ask me how the DD 5.1 EX track sounded louder and better than the DTS ES 6.1 track coz I simply dont know. Well maybe its due to my HTS which is 5.1 compatible and not ES 6.1 and the track is made to be played on a backward compatibility mode or something like that I really dont know. But overall I would say that I am gonna use this as one of the reference quality DVDs for showcasing my Home Theatre set up. So you know what I am talking about.
The Extras:
Well what can I say anything else about the extras. You must must already be knowing that this platinum edition of 12 DVDs with 2 DVD worth of extras for each film is probably the bar for any DVD package. Its just too much in depth and just too much stuff. The Extras are just MIND BLOWINGLY exhaustive
So for 2k guys I feel this a GREAT BUY really.Total reference material as I said when it came to video and audio quality. So get out of the mindset that its an Eagle Video product and that its made in India, forget about the fact that the packaging could have been of better quality and they could have done without that 30 secs of ad. If you are just concerned with the quality of discs presenting such an AWESOME EPIC movie and the content of this box set of 12 DVDs then GO FOR IT. You wont regret it... Hope this review helps. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks
