Hello folks,

One of my friend is facing battery drain in his Lumia 920. His phone is dropping battery as high as 60% in 9 hours time of night, during which phone is not used at all. Below is the sequence of all the events till date.

1. Phone originally purchased in Diwali time when on Flipkart it was selling for 20k-ish. Battery life reduced to 6 hours when gmail sync time reduced to 15 mins from 2 hours. However same is not the case with other Nokia Lumia phones. E.g. Lumia 720 has no such issue
2. Since it did not resolved he got his phone replaced in late Feb-early March.
3. In new phone kept sync time as 2 hours which resulted in regular battery life of around 20-22 hours
4. Few days back he tried once again to reduce sync time to 15 mins as wanted regular updates for mail
5. Battery life reduced again. So increased sync time back to 2 hours. But now the battery life has reduced to 10-12 hours at max without excess use or no background app running except WhatsApp. As of handset is around 2.5 months' age.

What could be reason behind this and what you guys suggest ?

Lumia 920 and battery issues are well known. Same suffered by a friend of mine. He has given the phone to service center.

Any other resolution apart from giving it to service centre ? Last time it took two weeks to replace phone with brand new one.

920 has an avg battery life to begin with

Now this is when its new. After a year that battery is going to creep lower into the 30's for endurance which is mediocre. Cannot underclock or do any tweaks. Battery needs to be replaced.

If you observe point 3 to 5, I have already mentioned how his phone suddenly got battery drain issue on doing something i.e. mail sync time. Also in point 3 I have mentioned that regular battery life of 20-22 years with which I have already considered that it's battery life is average :P

I feel I should also mention time-frame of events which might help in finding any cause. I have updated my main post with same. :)

ok, so its a 6 month battery. Seems like an app bug. Would reinstalling it make a difference.

Nope, the phone was replaced with a brand new one. Also this is default mail app which comes with OS. No possibility of reinstalling I guess :(

Try getting the battery replaced. Check the date on the new battery. There is nothing wrong with the phone that i can see. Either the first or the second.

Given this phone was nearly a year old when your friend bought it the first time last Nov. I suspect the battery it had was less capable of holding the charge. He then gets it replaced in Feb, again old battery. i think the gsync change is co-incidental.

I've seen these kinds of complaints when people buy older models. its the battery that cannot hold charge as well. LiPo's do not like to be stored flat.

as a general rule, if you're going to buy a phone that's nearing a year after introduction, ask for a new battery.

Check the sync settings. Maybe the sync to load all emails instead of emails from the past two weeks and -possibly- the phone is losing battery doing this every 15 minutes.

Update:
Been to service center and it seems they have just performed a factory reset which have restored battery to the original 20-22 hours. No replacement or any such procedure.

M hearing this for first time...
They dont entertain and say this is what you get in the box and anything extra you have to buy paying extra.
If you run into issue, run to the service centers.

These are the answers every retailer or anybody is prepared with...and i guess thats true too.
How can they give you any new accessory when you are buying a brand new sealed box no matter its a year old or two?

if it works then good but i've seen complaints for devices that were bought long after launch and battery is a common issue. Now whether you succeed or not is another question, but that's the first thing i'd look at if battery life seems unsatisfactory after many charge-discharge cycles.
