Making own Water Cooling kit

yup yup, I m trying hard to make my own radiator now a days. Daily visiting local radiator makers to make my own, even have given "blueprint" ( of thermochill 120.3 ) to them, one of them was a nice guy and took interest in my project, but He said it will cost a lot ( but less than original thermochill ) for just a single radiator as they have to make a mold 1st. so sadly I have to leave it as for now. Because I dont know if this gonna work as fine as genuine PC radiators! so 1st I want to try out with some lower cost radiator.

Today evening I visited to another shop, the young guy at the shop was interested, he said he can cut "maruti 800" radiator to make the size I want . but size is 30x30 cm of maruti radiator, while I want atleast 400mm wide to fit 3x120mm fans :D. He said he will find any old ( but in good condition ) copper-brass radiator and will cut it down for me. He will call me tomorrow morning if he can find old radiator as per my need. If not, I will buy and half-cut maruti 800 radiator.

If I will choose maruti 800 radiator, I will probably make 2 radiators from it ( its 30x30 cm in size, so it will be splited into 2 30x15cm radiators.) I will keep 1 of them and will sell another :).

Just stay tuned, I will update this topic when I will have the radiator ready!

Ask him to look for a old spilt a/c radiator unit too, should accord you more flexibility too with the large length and more fins.

Update :

Finally, I have got the radiator! I have given the right side panel of my case to the radiator maker to attach the radiator with it. I m gonna get back the panel with radiator today morning :). Beside it , in spare time I have lapped my waterblock! pics below. I havent lapped it manually using sandpaper..I went to an electro-platting workshop and done work there..it took 5 minutes to lap the block! money I had to pay for it??? guess? Rs. 10 only!!! :D see the pics below

The guy lapping my block, problem was, waterblock was getting too hot while lapping it on elctro-platting machine, that even welded joints of the blocks could been broken!!! so as he said, have to be careful while lapping it. He lapped it with mild hands and very carefully. sweet!!

thts all as for now....wait for some hours, I m gonna get my radiator n will post updates soon! :)

@blackperl, Yeah I remember u buddy! :).

It cost me about Rs.3500 for all! ( copper base plate, soldering charges, pump, radiator ( maruti VAN ) and goodies ). Its the 1st time I m making this, so some parts were totally useless and have wasted money on it but, its still cheaper than ready made kit! My radiator is ready, but I want to make some changes on fitting, so I will post pics when I will finalize my kit :). yet to buy 120mm fans :|.

@Gannu, thanks for ur words man :).

Can you post your temperatures with WC kit and air cooling @amit_talkin. If there's any kind'a improvement.

And @amit will 800lph pump suffice for a custom wc kit? or 2 in series?

^ temp. drop is 8 degree over my Vendetta 2. ( down from 58c idle to 50c idle on my quad - 85c load with linpack test fallen to 75c load. Are you thinking its still too high? may be, I think I got a bad chip having faulty temp. sensors :|. ). Yet to get my 120mm fans which I am waiting for getting delivered. Then yet to use distilled water + coolant + 120mm fans which will surely drop another 3-4 C I believe!

And yes, a SINGLE 800lph pump is more than enough if you just gonna cool CPU! You can also cool VGA card with 800lph pump! It will be better if you can find a centrifugal pump instead submersible , I tried to find in my city and on internet ( india only ), but didnt find any so had to get submersible. It requires a lot of space and you have to make a big reservoir to put it inside, I will up the pics of my funny ghetto type reservoir and radiator soon!! :D

Here are the pics, just taken few mins. ago. System is still under tests as I m waiting for my fans to arrive :). I have just finishing making mounts for the fans so I have taken the pics of it. It may look ghetto type of setup, but still I have to do some work on it. look at the reservoir..lol . Right now I have only 2x120 mm fans, 1x OCZ vendetta2's 60CFM ( which I have replaced with 90CFM CM fan) and another 43CFM CM Fan (that blue LED ). I have ordered 80CFM fans ( 40db ) which gonna arrive from hong kong very soon :).

here are the pics.

thnx man, actually this one is Maruti Van's radiator. Just have few minor changes from original, like there is no radiator cap in this and smaller nozzle size as per my need :).

now, I m gonna make VGA block and north bridge block soon :D.

you painted the radiator black right? what did you use? :P

won't the paint have a detrimental effect on the heat dissipation?

and what cabinet is that ? some more pics of the insides wud be welcome.

wud rep after spreading some :)

NO, I havent painted the radiator, that was done by radiator maker. I dont think painting the radiator can affect the heat dissipation because the contact area, where copper fins and pipes touches each other, cant be painted. However I m not sure about this, because I never tried non painted radiator to compare.

The cabinet I m using is UMAX Terminator gaming case...cant be compared to high end cabinets but it having somewhat good cooling options. 2x80mm front fans, 2x80mm rear fans, 4x80mm top fans and 1x80mm side fan. However for the price I got, it is reasonable for the price.

Just let me know about which kinda pics u want? I will get it done :).

Paint affects heat transfer. You can get heat dissipating paint/ metal based paints that are more conductive for heat. Regular oil/ acrylic based paints are insulators. Ask your guy what he put on.

very nice idea , I hv 4 fans fited in my box , and they make hell lot of noise ,need sumthing like this desi jugad , If you suceed then plz let me know ....

One of the brilliant mods on the forum! Congrats for all the contraption there.

PS: Please put up a step-by-step guide on this mod!

PS2: Click clear and bandwidth friendly pics.

PS3: Do not ask for reps! Put up a guide and reps'd follow (depending on the content, effectiveness & clarity of it i.e.)
