Awesome news for peeps looking for an affordable AVR which does 7.1 audio decoding through HDMI! :ohyeah:

The D&M holdings announced the launch of the new marantz slim-line AVR NR 1601 at a price tag of 599 USD and the previous model NR-1501 gets a 200 USD price cut and retails for 399 USD!

There're minimal differences in the specs of the two AVRs - the NR1601 supports the Audyssey auto calibration, few extra audio codecs, a better DSP, HDMI 1.4a, front USB input, bundles a backlit remote etc. Going by the reviews, the NR 1501 is seemingly good for stereo audio setups as well . The 50W per channel is not a bad deal IMO. A pair of Wharfedales/Tannoy F1 customs/Monitor Audio B1s should be an ideal VFM pair to these babies. :D

The NR1501 previously, used to retail for close to 25k at Alfa, Vile Parle, ex-grey market pricing. I have enquired the pricing with few other official dealers as well. Shall keep this thread updated if I receive any price quotes. :)

I got a response from a dealer by the name Ashraf Taibani (Maria International, Mumbai) - he quoted 25k INR. I have asked him few queries. :P

1601 is more advanced ,HDMI 1.4,improved sound boards & USB input.It can be good for room size upto 10 X 12.
1501 was available for 25k in grey & can hope to get 1601 for the same.

OK I just spoke to Ashraf - he said they are the official distris for marantz in India. He said he can send me the AVR for 25k to Surat but that would be without B&W. Bill requires a payment of VAT which is 12.5%. Not a bad deal IMO. :)

If anyone resides close to Alfa, Vile Parle, please enquire the pricing. It should be much cheaper now if it retailed for 25k previously.

@spiro: where do you reside? By any chance if you are visiting Alfa, please enquire the price. MTIA.

Does it do HD DTS-MA or HD True Dolby. Wow can't resist this at 25K. Great offer from great manufacturers. Any reviews yet from net ? Hows Music to Movies performance ?

Whatever 25K is a stealer for 7.1 Marantz !

I m in Mulund & hardly visit to alpha.My friends often visits there & he may update the price.

I'm banking on this one. :P

Reviews suggest that performance on a stereo setup for music is amazing for an AVR worth 400USD. And pretty decent for movies as well. It may not be able to feed high-end floorstanders but that is out of question since someone looking for floorstanders would look elsewhere.

@op why do you want to buy from mumbai? maharashtra is only state with octroi. imo, won't you get it cheaper from other states like delhi?

Btw titana told me that the NR 1501 is priced at 26k, ex-Delhi grey market pricing. :)

I am very keen on getting this unit plus a pair of bookshelves. Probably the PSB Alpha B1/Wharfedales 9.1/Tannoy Mercury F1 customs. I was recommended the Alpha B1. I have to drop in at bombay and audition them before I select one. Have a budget of 40k for the 2 and probably some DIY ethernet cable for the interconnects. :P

Desecrator, good choice if you are planning to go for it. I have auditioned it with Mission, Paradigm speakers and it performed surprisingly well with stereo mode for music. And the 50w is deceptive, it has ample power for movies and music. Finally 25k for an avr with hd audio decoding over hdmi is great value.

^Thanks for the input! Read up a lot over the past few days and people are extremely satisfied over the stereo setup. I did read that the power ratings @ 50W a channel seems to be under-rated. :P

Btw I am planning to pick this up on September - have planned a trip with ANP!!! :P

Gannu, gimme a buzz when going for an audition. A friend has the same 40k budget for amps+bookshelves has been pestering me since a long time to accompany him for auditions :)

Tentatively Spetember 2nd weekend - will get my LTA once I am back from the vacation. LOL nothing like blowing it up the same week! :D.

ANP!!! knows the place where he got his Wharfes - IIRC it is Bass n Treble. Will gather more info on the shops in the meantime.

In other news, i don't think my DIY AV rack will materialise because I am not able to source the M16 studs. I was told 4 of these will cost me in excess of 2k! :O :ashamed:
