Hey guys
which is better marble or tile flooring? please let me know pros and cons of both and which one u guys prefer :S

tile cheaper alternative hard to clean

and marble expensive easy to clean and it actually decreases temperature in ur house thats pretty good as it lowers Ac usgae alot

you will require better skilled worked with marble.

also per sq ft. cost of marble will turn out to be very expensive.

marble will also be prone to pitting mild acids (present in food and beverages).

you will have a wider variety in tiles..

you can get 36"x36" or 1m x 1m tiles..get them fit properly to eliminate the visibility of line of contact..that will be much more easier and lighter on the pocket.

but seriously.. consult an interior decorator for this...

well both have their pros and cons.

marble flooring is expensive and looks elegant but u need to find a good layer who cuts the slabs wisely to minimize wastage.Marble flooring requires a lot of polishing(like 8 coats) to bring out the best. on the other hand tiles dont require any polishing whatsoever and are rather easy to lay and doesnt require cutting most of the time. but they may not look as elegant as marble. If I were you I wud go for tiles. just go out to various outlest and look. Dont miss to visit RAK ceramics if you decide upon tiles.

Marble looks good but very difficult to maintain... It requires polishing to retain sheen unlike tiles...Cleaning of tiles is not difficult since it can withstand most commercially available cleaners but with marble it will loose its shine. Also marble is a delicate stone very easily scratched...

well marble will turn very expensive if u choose italian or macrana(not sure abt the spelling). You can get a pretty decent variety for like 70-80 rs per sft and laying will cost 8-10 rs per sft another 8-10 per sft for polishing.

Nowadays, designer vetrified tiles are almost as elegant as marble while not including any of its cons. Try Kajaria and other good brands of vetrified tiles. Recommended over marble.

Marbonite tiles can be used. I have 1 feet x 1 feet (i think) off white colour at my home. Initally when the work was done , the lines between two tiles was hardly visible. Also gives a very good look to home with full white (off white actually) flooring. Easy to clean also.

marble : the pros : looks elegant, larger size so easily covers the area fast, less joints.

Cons : the surface is porous so highly addictive of collecting stains, dust marks, requires a very good person to polish uniformly and very well, requires frequent polishing.

the cost varies from 30 rs per sq ft to 400 per sq ft.

Tiles : there are multiple varieties to choose from Vitrified / Porceileno / Granamite.

Right now the trend is of Vitrified or Granamite tiles usage, it looks elegant, easy to maintain and can be of budget cost also.

the best of tiles is its very easy to maintain and clean, housewives and ladies are always happy with it.
A personal advise:
If its your dream house and you need something exclusive then look for R. R. Marbles, its a company with own leased mines of marble in rajasthan.

In my short surveys over the years I have never seen such wonderfull, elegant and exotic colours in marbles anywhere. it comes at a cost though.

This is the most important point I feel, just a mild acid soluiton will restore tiles to brand new, no such chance with marble. You should actually test for this with tiles as some can handle it whilst others not.

Is it a good time to go in for tiles as the building industry is still depresed so the costs might be cheaper than a yr or so back ?

I was thinking of covering the older mosaic tiles as they are impossible to clean once damaged, but then the thought of fixing all the doors makes me uneasy.

Yes, but the more fancy the color the more likely it will fall out of fashion ?

In any case OP, which ever option you choose make sure you get spare tiles to use for replacement in case of damage in the future. Especially if this is in batrooms or covering water pipes. You will never be able to match the colour in the future otherwise.

area is 5000 sqft. budget 4 lacs

By now you know the pros and cons of the Marble and Tiles.

Your budget of Rs. 80/_ sq feet is very less for either of them.

Marble

Average Marble ( Morward/Rajnagar white/Agariya ) starts from 60/- psf good marble like Makrana/Katni/Wonder Marble retail at around 100/- psf. Italian/turkish/Vitenam marble will cost anything from 150/- to 1000/- psf
Add another 25/- psf for fixing and polishing
Tiles

For flooring the default standard is Vitrified tiles and there are two kind of tiles in here. First is full body vitrified tiles which starts over 100/- psf and usually comes in 2 feet by 2 feet sizes. The second one are also called vitrified which has just a thin layer of vitrified stuff over a regular ceramic tile and these are priced from Rs. 50/ psf and these are also available in 2 feet by 2 feet usually.

You can add another 15/- for fixing tiles

The good strategy would be to use Good Quality tiles/marble in living, lobby, drawing room/kitchen and not so good quality for bedrooms/stores/bathrooms to balance your budget.

Double charge Vitrified tiles of rak 2ft by 2ft, they suit ur budget the best...
Marble is very high maintenance, while tiles are very easy to maintain!
The polishin is a pita, while you can get some extra tiles and if some get scratched, replace at a later time..

Another problem with marble is that it wont be uniform, and trying to find 5000sq of same grain marble will be a headache and probably costly..
Marble also has a tendency to get dirty..
One good thing with marble is that the floor is single level, no matter what you do, the tiles will hav level difference , not much, but lil..

The surface of double charge rak tiles is very tough, if you pull an iron rod it wil chip the marble but on the tiles it will leave a black mark(not scratch) which u can remove using a rubbing compound..!

if you opt of vitrified tiles make sure the person putin them is good at his work . does not mix match the lots. the edges are matched properly. right amount of cement is used or else the edges wont meet. also use white cement layer on the top so that the borders of the tiles look clean

nope the colours are extremely good looking and you wont get bored of them over a long period even. :D

yes your second point is vital, specially if you need some repairs sometime down the years the replacement if not matching looks ugly.
