I am using a maxtor basics portable HDD. It is only a week old. It comes with a cable which can be connected to 2 USB ports to draw more power. i.e., one is a data+pwr cable and other is only a pwr cable.

I use only data+pwr cable to connect it to the comp. It was working fine for some days, and now suddenly it starts making a beep and the white LED keeps flashing even when I am not accessing it. I didn't know external HDDs had a beeper inside them :P .

Also, once I got a delayed write failure.. I was not writing anything into the disk in the first place.

Should I change my drive? What exactly is the problem? It has fallen from say a feet or 2 once :@

The last part is probably your problem :P

Use HDTune to scan for bad sectors. If you find any, just get it RMAed :)

hey thanks for the software.. It is showing many sectors as damaged. What proof do I have to give the seller to tell him it is not working fine?

repped..

You cannot return it to the seller. Just goto the nearest Maxtor service center and tell them the disk has got bad sectors. They will replace it, assuming its under warranty of course :)
