The Maxtor brand name will continue to live on under the Seagate umbrella, Seagate announced today. Seagate will use the Maxtor DiamondMax brand for a line of lower-end desktop hard drives and is introducing a new MobileMax brand for notebook hard drives.

The DiamondMax drives will be available in sizes up to 320GB at the onset, with the possibility of hitting higher capacities down the line. Marketed with the tagline "reliability and value for mainstream PC applications," the DiamondMax 20 and 21 come in both Ultra ATA/100 and SATA II flavors, 2MB or 8MB of cache, and a spindle speed of 7200rpm. Unlike Seagate-branded drives, they come with a three-year warranty instead of five. By way of contrast, the just-phased-out DiamondMax 10 comes in capacities of up to 500GB with 16MB of cache.

2.5" MobileMax drives are designed for lower-end laptops and laptop owners looking to boost the storage capacity of their aging notebooks. Spindle speed is maxed out at 5400rpm and MobileMax's storage ceiling is 80GB. MobileMax will be sold both to OEMs and end users in need of an upgrade.

"With Maxtor DiamondMax and MobileMax hard drives from Seagate, system builders and resellers will be able to deliver our desktop and notebook PC hard drives across a fuller spectrum of customers and applications," said Karl Chicca, Seagate senior vice president and general manager of Personal Storage.

Seagate's other drives, such as the popular Barracuda 7200 series, will live on as higher-end brands. There will be some overlap between the low-end Barracudas and DiamondMax lines, but Seagate's product segmentation strategy is clear. Maxtor drives will be for those looking for storage on a budget, while Seagate-branded drives will offer better performance, higher capacities, and longer warranties.
