Hi Guys,

Recently I have come across many members who have chosen the word "Banned" to be displayed as their user title. Now some people might find it cool but I on the other hand find it completely stupid and it bothers me. How are we supposed to distinguish between members who are actually banned and the ones who aren't?

If we look at this from a newcomers point of view or rather a guest, what kind of impression of TE is this setting on them when they assume that so many members are being banned on this site?

Hence it is my sincere request to the management to make it against the rules to use the word banned as a user title.

Regards
Bluff~

Hehehe...

same way a newbie will consider "Bite me" as intimidating and "Legendary" as a actual status. Its a public forum guys....and its "custom"..whats the point otherwise?

Actually we are looking at the matter, maybe if a hack can be provided or incorporating it in the guidelines etc.

very well put.....any newbie who will stick around after the first initial few days would anyways get to know whats real and whats not.

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> User Profile Options -> Censored Words for Usertitle

There are more then a billion custom words to choose from and I don't care which one you choose. But the word "banned" is reserved for members who are actually banned from this site. Members should not misuse the powers given to them.

But why to put them in a dilemma in the first place? And what about guests? Surely they wouldn't figure it out. And guests are the most important traffic of a forum, its important what kind of a image we set in front of them. We were all afterall guests at some point, weren't we?

I suppose, censoring one word won't take away much from the "custom tag".

Its objective. You see it one way, other in another way. As long its not offensive or anything, let it be. why a hooplah about such a meager thing, that too from a old member not from a newbie. That's my opinion about it.:)

In the end its the site owners call.

I am just stating whats good for TE. Besides it really irritates me. The other day I saw this member with a banned user tag and I was surprised and wondered what got a good member like him banned only to later realize that it was a stupid custom tag that the member was using.

Its a small thing, sure, but then its all in the details. I just expressed my concerns, rest is upto the management to decide. :)

P.S : I have nothing against the members using the "Banned" tag, just that I feel its not good for the site and may lead to unnecessary confusion.

I agree with Bluffy in a way. There has to be some way to differentiate between a Banned user, and someone who is just using "banned" as a user title.

We have two options:

1. Prohibit using "banned" as a user title using vBulletin options or hacks, or by just making it a TE rule. In the same vein, we can also prohibit members from using titles like "TE Administrator", "The Mod", etc.. (P.S: I really don't know if there are members using such titles, but if it is true, please do not take offence - I'm just giving random examples :P ).

2. Or, members really banned could have their user name colour changed to red or something like that, or their names could be struck-through instead of the normal font, or just change their usernames to banned1, banned2, etc.. ;)
This way we can differentiate banned users from users with custom user titles.

^^

option 2 will only affect the banned people... and i think thats the right course without affecting the Not banned folks... :)

At the moment there is no option to differentiate between banned members and those who have custom title as banned.
If the two can be differentiated somehow, then there won't be any problem.
Till then, I am against "banned" as a custom title as it is plain confusing.

I also have this confusion. I don't know who is banned and who is not. I would get worried about whether to use the market for these so called "banned" individuals. (I also don't get why one would want to assume such status alongside their username but anyways.)

To avoid potential misunderstanding by members new and old, the easiest approach might be just to reserve this word. But, maybe folks using this type of identification should comment also.

If a user is banned he will not have an avatar or signature. if anyone has, they are just playing around :P
