Do I need to install a mic in order to use it? Or should it just function on it's own?

da mic shall work fine....

yup, as long as the drivers for ur soundcard or motherboard if onboard sound are installed, u can use the mic

u dont need to install the mic.but u can sure configure it for optimum performance if u have a soundmax soundcard .(In win xp) Goto control panel->Soundmax.It will open the soundmax config utility where u can config your mic.use sndvol32 to adjust mic volume.

it will function on its own provided it is enabled in your sounds control panel.
