Microsoft’s tight hardware spec for Windows Phone 7 smartphones means that Windows Mobile 6.x devices – including HTC’s just-launched HD2 – can’t be upgraded.

Owners of HTC’s highly-praised HD2 touchscreen smartphone will be unable to upgrade the device to Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 software when the OS is released towards the end of the year.

Despite the HD2 meeting many of the criteria laid down in Microsoft’s ‘Chassis 1’ spec – including a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, high-res capacitive touch display, 5 megapixel camera and 3.5mm headphone jack – the phone will be ruled out for the simple reason that it has five buttons instead of the three mandated for all Windows Phone 7 devices.

This is very bad, but nowhere has it been mandated or stated by either htc or microsoft that hd2 will be fully upgradable to win mo 7.

Doesn't really matter anyway. I'm sure XDA will facilitate a Windows Phone 7 Series rom for the HD2 before it even hits the market ;)

but seriously... i wouldent even mind not upgrading to the windows phone 7 series at all, i mean its just ZuneHD phone.. the UI isnt that great, no backwards compatibility, totally locked OS, i mean its definetly no better than Iphone, no thank u, the reason i love windows mobile is coz of the bazzillion customization options, but as stated above, the XDA ppl can definetly come up with something, and if they r really gonna ditch such an expensive phone like HD2, damm the ppl will be furious, i hope they will be and ditch microsoft as well as the dammed HTC :P , well lets hope again that they change their minds...

TBH one should take these claims of upgrade (which is planted very cleverly by these handset makers) with a table spoon of salt.

if this is how it is gonna be played, then microsoft is gonna hand the win over to android on a silver platter.
