Very interesting read:

“Microsoft is set to broaden its battle with Google this week,†reports the Financial Times, “as it pushes ahead with online versions of some of its core software, including final plans for a ‘cloud’ operating system designed to extend Windows to the internet. The news comes days after Google took aim at Microsoft with the announcement of a PC operating system of its own, dubbed Chrome OS.â€

“The rival moves point to an intensification of the battle between the technology giants, with Google trying to extend its internet platform to PCs, and Microsoft moving in the opposite direction. While Google’s PC operating system is not due to appear in new computers until the second half of 2010, Microsoft’s cloud operating system will be launched formally this year.â€

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking at this from two perspectives.

First of all, as those who provide support to end users, we always try to remain a step ahead of the next generation of technology. We’d like to know what’s coming. We have to decide whether or not we’ll support it, and if so, what’s the best course of action.

But secondly, I must admit, I’m watching this from the seat of a spectator, not unlike at a sporting event. We see on the field before us, two titans of technology battling each other for market dominance. We all know that a lot of technology support professionals would like to see Microsoft knocked down a few notches and are critical for its reluctance to join the open source movement. Google, on the other hand, has gotten just about as big as Microsoft, but in their own niche of technology. Google, for instance, not only dominates the search engine market, but it has actually transformed itself from a noun to a verb - something not many companies have managed to pull off. (Xerox, of course, comes to mind.)

What’s your take on this Google versus Microsoft challenge? How does it affect your role as a user support pro?

And will Google eventually become a technology demon like Microsoft has become (at least in the eyes of some)? How big will it have to get, and how much of a market share will it have to gain before technology pros want to see Google knocked down a few notches? After all, the public loves rags to riches stories, like Google, but then again, they also love to see the mighty and powerful fall.

Unless we get hands on Google Chrome OS,we really can't really tell that Google is going to rule the market.

but AFAIK Google isn't as silly as Microsoft.so we can expect strong tug-of-war between the both.

now we can sit sit in the seat and watch their play.

I agree. However whats really interesting here is the shift of computing paradigm. Cloud based computing is what I believe is bound to change our computing experience. So its interesting to see the tussle between traditional vs this new one.

I think this ends the microsoft era of computing. This is the next wave, which would enable the goliath to finally show the world what it had been hiding up its sleeve. I see a big win-win already for chrome for the simple reason being that it is also set to benefit the telecom companies along with google. And considering the number of increasing data centers being bought by both google and microsoft it is evident that this is just the beginning. Now the only question remains here to be answered is whether the telecom companies would be able to deliver in terms of infrastructure. Lets wait and watch, at this point it is too early to comment on how things would shape up.

Very true, cause the cloud computing is quite going to depend upon telecom infrastructure. Heck that will be the backbone of it.

I have also Heard that Microsoft In Cumming Months Might make Office 2003 or 2007 Free to all to Compete with Google

MS office 2010 has a web interface like google docs...

And with cloud computing MS has a big edge as they devise .NET and push VS 2008 and technologies likewise...
They first make a OS, then a platform for users to program .NET, then have virtualization and put all togeather to form the cloud ... sounds like a good strategy

That would mean a setback for countries (like ours) that have poor broadband infrastructure. Also, how safe would it be to keep ALL the data online? Not sure where this would go until the OS is out for public.

so as i ,being microsoft i do not support microsoft at all:no:

How many times anti-MS will say like this. First Solaries, then Apple, then Linux, now google. Do you know that bing is fastly eating google market share like anything. Making an product is easy as compared to giving after sales service. Its just like comapring Germans to Chinese products.Google is good in everything which do not require after sales support. Ms is perfect in it.

Bing is the biggest failure MS has ever come up with. Just type search sex and see the results. Man how ridiculous MS can be what if I am doing a search on sex ? They have signed contract with population control or what ? :@

Getting ahem keys is even simple in bing just give it a try. MS is out of idea for sure. Rebranding OS and pushing pathetic engines is all they can do now :P Add to that they must be[ pretty sure] hardware vendors not to include linux on netbooks.

Google will not fall, nor any of its products will.

All rubbish and blabber.
What some retarded journalist writes for 4000$ doesn't becomes truth.
You obviously have no idea of what you are talking.
Use Bing for 1 months exclusively and then repost.

Pulling out numbers from where?

agree you have to use it for a while to actually know its capability. Bing has some very good feature with same speed as google.

though I am also anti-Microsoft (using xp)

try sex with safe search off.

^^^ Huh, try Intel e1000 NAPI driver on both.

If people think "How do I cook pasta?" is a search query then they are better off at Bing.

Try putting some real queries in Bing and you ll be ashamed to use it.

Typically, we as consumers end up being the winners as these types of giants both push the envelope to make better OS/Software. Competition is healthy and tends to forward technology at a far faster rate, I mean look at ATI & Nivida and Intel & AMD as examples where consumers end up with cheaper more advanced products.

I am not very much interested in 100 page search results. Infact bing is more likely to return accurate results.

Its unfair that when brick is on our head, we shout, if on another's the we celebrate.
