Microsoft may be showcasing their Surface Mini tablet in their 20th May conference.

The device is expected to compete with the iPad mini with a 7.5-inch, 1440 x 1080 display. It may NOT be running the fully fledged Windows 8 as it is supposedly running on a Qualcomm processor. Windows RT means that no desktop apps for it.

Its a shame coz I like Surface pro for it productivity, similar to a laptop, but its too expensive. Additionally 8" screen size is just about perfect for me coz then I can hold the thing in one had. While Microsoft may have checked all the other boxes it might pull out the Windows desktop apps out of the equation.

Some more info from WPcentral on the prices. I guess the $999 i5 model would be most appropriately placed albeit still a bit too costly for my liking. I really did want to own a Surface Pro for its capability at this form factor.

Talking of form factor, is it realistic to place a core i7 in such a cramped assembly of a tablet? What happens when it starts revving at full throttle and overheats. We will have more tablet coolers in the market to cater to heat issues.

For the Surface Pro 3, which is now confirmed as being a real device, there will be five versions offered with varying pricing and configurations:
  • i3-4GB RAM-64GB - $799
  • i5-4GB RAM-128GB - $999
  • i5-8GB RAM-256GB - $1299
  • i7-8GB RAM-256GB - $1549
  • i7-8GB RAM-512GB - $1949

Detailed specs will be revealed later.

So much for that theory.

Microsoft announces its biggest tablet yet, the 12-inch Surface Pro 3; starts at $799

surface mini will be another big failure like rt. who gives ms these ideas that people actually would like to buy a stripped version when acer/lenovo 8 inch tabs run full windows 8
