The advertised 32GB storage of Microsoft's latest Surface Tablet with Windows RT is not really 32GB, just around half of it actually usable.

Microsoft has cleared in a FAQ exactly how much storage will be usable in the versions of Surface and how the rest of storage is used up.

Out of the 29GB and 58GB reported by Windows in the 32GB and 64GB versions respectively, the Windows 8 RT operating system, Office and other built-in apps are using 8GB of the storage already. Reserved space utilizes another 5GB of space so finally user will be left with just 16GB free storage on the 32GB Surface and 45GB free on the 64GB version.

So if you are looking to buy the Surface tablet which starts at $499 for the 32GB version, and need more storage, either buy higher capacity version for some extra premium or buy a memory card .
