Microsoft will not apologise for Xbox bans

Microsoft has today issued a statement saying that it is unapologetic for banning around one million users from Xbox Live and that the affected users represent only a small percentage of Xbox 360 users.

The bans occurred earlier this week as part of a counter-piracy strike on Microsoft's behalf that targets players running pirated games via the MAC address, meaning that the user will have to buy a new Xbox 360 in order to regain access to Xbox Live. Users can still recover their gamer profiles, but they need to do it on a new Xbox 360.

"If it's clear someone is downloading pirated copies or have modified their Xbox in some way that will allow them to download games that they haven't purchased legitimately and yes we lock that account down and we're unapologetic about that," Microsoft's European Xbox head Chris Lewis said.

Microsoft has refused to issue an exact figure of how many gamers were banned from Xbox Live, but reports speculate that the figure is around one million.

The mass ban itself was likely timed around the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and focused on users playing the game before it was officially released.

Microsoft gave plenty of warning before the ban, saying that users should all be aware that piracy is illegal and should expect to be punished.

"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal, and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs, violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live."

^^ Exactly ... They needn't apologize to anyone.... Its clearly mentioned in the XBOX live TOS.... Also they are just banning the modded consoles.. You can still take the hard drive to an unmodded console and continue using the XBL subscription.....

Who expected an apology in the first place? I own a modded console, but I have not used Live, well not a Gold a/c at least. If people playing illegal copies online have got banned, then Microsoft doesn't owe them anything, apology being far behind. But if a legal user has faced this issue in a series of ban, then they dam sure need an explanation.

I only thing i font get is that this would Boost the Xbox 360 console sales only .. It doesnt get the Game studios any money back that they lost due to the piracy of games .. Its just a very clever ploy for MS to boost its sales without giving a share of it to the concerned Game Studios ..

Tjhat is going to happen indirectly. Next time, people will be a little bit wary of playing pirated games and would buy the original games.

How will we get to know if the console is banned or not?

Will we get an email to the registered account? Logged in only once for the media update.

Lets suppose a guy gets banned playing pirated games and he gets a new console. Are you saying that he would be stupid enough to mod the console again and play pirated games again? In most likely hood he would buy the games as well. So its not just MS that benefits from such an action. Even if is you say, I don't see why MS should have any obligation of sharing what it gets on consoles with its game studios.

When you try to log into your Live a/c, you will have this screen popping up:

They need to apologise, not for banning modded consoles, but for the shameful reliability of their products.

See the scenario i am trying to present is as follows :
I get a Xbox for 15K
Play 20 pirated Games worth 25K .. My investment is easily recovered aint it? otherwise my expenditure would have been 15K + 25K = 40K which is a huge amount .. I read somewhere that 70% of people buy another console and Mod it again as it turns out cheaper than paying for the games ..
So in the end its just microsoft who is benifiting from the Xbox Bans and not the game studios ..
Now to the point why Microsoft should pay to Game studios is cuz they are the ones in this chain who are losing out on profit cuz of Piracy and not MS (taking non MS Games into consideration for now) .. If i play pirated games then thats not effecting MS as i am still paying the Xbox Live money to them and not to the game studios .

you do realize that MS gets paid for non-MS games as well.

^^I dont think he does. Any consoles main source of revenue isnt the hardware sold (most of the times Hardware is sold at a loss) but the software (games) and services (Xbl gold and Downloadable games/movies etc.).

In then end if people buy an arcade and dont buy games for it MS dont make much money off that. So piracy hurts MS. A LOT.

That's why Sony can afford to sell PS3 at loss as they know that because it is not cracked (as of now), people are forced to buy genuine PS3 games only.

Yeah Microsoft really needs to appologize for the poor quality of the hardware !!!

I still cant figure out why people buy the Xbox 360 till today. When I bought mine the PS3 have very expensive games & very few used games. Now the situation is on par and if I had bought a console today I would have gone hands down with the PS3.
