Hi guys,

I need to buy two things for my kitchen, so please help me choose the models/brands.

1) Microwave: The usual fare, but I need it to be able to grill/cook chicken/fish. The background: I have had to switch my diet of late and eat very little oil in my food. No red meat. However, I can eat chicken, so I am presently boiling it and then lightly frying it. I want the microwave to do this for me - to cook chicken with very little spices and oil. Additionally, I want it to be able to cook shredded chicken/chopped vegetables, which will be added to steamed rice to make an all-in-one dish.

Also, with guests, would prefer to be able to cook a large chicken/two small chicken simultaneously in the MW, so size should be adequate.

Q - Will a convection MW be able to do this? Or do I have to specifically go for the grill variant?

2) Rice cooker. Reliable and with long life.

Please suggest guys.

1) A Convection oven will have grill facility. So buy a good LG convection Microwave

2)You can get Rice cooker rom Rs. 1500- to Rs. 4000/-. Available brands are Kenstar, Bajaj, Panasonic, Oster and Black & Decker etc. Bajaj or Kenstar model with Rs. 2500/- are cheapest.

But Black and Deckers and Panasonic are Reliable with pretty long life

Was about to say that, get a pyrex container and it should work. You would need a 600W one and it should be big enough to take it. Over here the microwaves are pretty small.

What i'm unsure about is how well grilling will work in the microwave compared to a seperate grill. The price might be quite high to get an all-in -one.

That's curious given the red meat we get here is pretty low in fat to begin with compared to what you get abroad.

you can cook rice in the microwave too, no need for a seperate cooker
Will it work out on these small MWs? Also, how long does it take to cook rice in a MW?

I have been diagnosed with a crappy condition called IBS , irritable bowel syndrome, so the diet changes :(

Find out what their power is first and then you will have to adjust for it.

With a 600W that i used abroad, I set it to 10 mins high and then 10-15 mins on medium. It was all programmable so just set & forget. This is just for one person so one mug of rice to two mugs of water.

And i think the quality is no different to a rice-cooker at all. I've used this way of making rice for at least 10 years. You may have to tweak settings depending on the amount & kind of rice used. But the above settings worked for all the types i had there, long grain, uncle Ben's even basmati.

Ahh, but does the type of meat you eat play any role in this, isn't it mostly to do with spices in this case.

Yes it will work, make sure you understand how microwave works & use JUST the required amount of water, I pre soak rice for 10 mins & then cook as vegetable biryani in 10-12 mins at 900watt, plain rice takes 5 mins with the right amount of water, excess water will take more time to evaporate thus long cooking time.

take daily coconut water its the best for IBS & natural, nowdays you get packed in bottles too by the brand name www.cocojal.com eating probiotic curd, fibrous fruits & vegetable will help you cured soon.

Exactly but many type of foods/vegetables/dals also aggravate such condition.

i do want to know about the fumes and oil which goes up with the vapour during cooking. is it taken care by the micro wave or do we need to keep it under a electric chimney?. does the microwave have such filters that keeps oil and fumes with it during cooking.?
