I have a Pentium 4, 2.4GHz machine. I have a 160 KB kgb archive which claims to have 700 MB Movie file. I tried to decompress it but it said "Not enough memory". What is the Minimum requirement for KGB Archiver to work ?

Out of curiosity, can KGB archiver compress things to such a small size ??

kgb archiver is a crapware.

it has also been known to also carry spywares.

needs humongous amounts of memory/cpu cycles.

ok so u want to send a 700mb movie file to ur frnd using an email attachment of 160KB.

well if u r going to need 2 weeks to compress it on ur pc to that size , i donot think it is worth it.

i dont want to send the file to anyone. Its just hat i downloaded it and would like to decompress it. It is not possible at home i suppose and i will decompress it in my office machine since it is ON for all the 5 days

I know but why wait for 5 days? Also while decompressing the computer slows down to some extent. When and how will he do the office work with that?

O boy! Me embarrased me try to use kgb once and posted the thread 'KGB Archiver'. Me wise now advice all others never to use KGB. :ashamed:

Just trying out the thing. it says it'll be done in 6hrs time extracting 700mb rip of Munnabhai 2 :)

@rak007, its taking about 830mb of ram right now and I think it's going to keep increasing :P...

>> if you really think the KGB archiver works

Are you sure that KGB archiver doesn't work? :P

OR the PAQ series of compressors don't work?

>>kgb archiver is a crapware.

>>it has also been known to also carry spywares.

Links please.

As far as I know KGB used PAQ series of algorithms.

(Data Compression Programs)

PAQ series won this -> Compress Wikipedia and Win AI Prize Be a Programmer.

And BLARF is supposed to be a joke guys, I don't know why the other threads on TE have hammered it.

Of course I agree that PAQ/KGB is not a practical software as such.

Also I saw some people claiming compressing 4GB into 1 KB. Sure its possible

since the input was a sparse file. I started making mini-images (way back before the term OR practice got popular) for my own games.

Some games (or rather protection mech.) check the whole DVD disk structure and hence maxi images have to be created. The size of maxi images is ~4.3 GB but the game contents are removed from it and hence it can

be compressed to like 2-3MB. (Just put MAXI image on NTFS compressed folder and check its size :P)

I never said 4 GB could not be compressed to 1k. i said you cant compress any 4GB to 1k. depending on the redundancy, i suppose it could be compressed even more :D

See i may not believe in this software but just for the heck of it i wanted to try decompressing the file for once. I installed the software in my office machine and the same is getting decompressed now. The time it told me when started was a staggering 5000 Hours. hehehe

But it kept decreasing. The current status stands at 73% decompression complete in 18 Hrs. 7 Hrs more remaining according to what is see now. I had once got Office 2003 in some 1.4 Mb and i knew that was crap. Will let you all know what the final result is when the decompression is complete

@broar94

I suppose it is taking 830 MB of the virtual windows page file because my machine has only 512 MB of RAM.

Well I decompressed already and there is only 2secs(intro screen) of the movie in that file. A big farce :(
