I have been using a Nokia N73 for most of the last 6 months. It has been a journey of contrasts, there have been moments of wonder as I discovered new uses and applications but the majority experience has been one of frustration. The slow interface, which got slower with each new firmware update, the applications that never installed or never ran after installation, the joystick that gets stuck, the list is ever ending. However, my time with the N73 is coming to an end, my mother is going to the US for an extended visit and I thought it would help her to have a phone with a good camera, so I gave it to her.
Right now, I am using a Nokia 6300. It’s an good phone, incredibly thin with a gorgeous display but its no smartphone. I miss the great s60 browser that could display full html, the freeform voice dialing, the incredibly useful apps like Mobipocket reader(I’ve read 3 full novels on the tiny screen) and Sportstracker and most of all, the great camera.
I definitely see myself getting a smartphone in the future. The only question that I have is on the timing. There’s already a phone out there that meets every single one of my requirements, the Nokia N82, it is absolutely the best phone you can buy today for that price (and that includes the iphone). But, I am still planning to hold off on buying it for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the iphone is launching in India on Aug 22. There’s no way I am going to buy the iphone, but depending on the price they launch it at, I expect a correction in the price of other smartphones. Why jump when I could potentially get it a couple of thousand bucks cheaper in 2 weeks? Secondly, there are a lot of exciting phones that are launching in the next few months like the Nokia Tube, Samsung Instinct, Sony Experia X1, HTC’s Android phones. If one of them turns out to be the most amazing phone ever, I don’t want to be kicking myself for having jumped the gun. Hence, my decision to continue with the 6300 for now:S
