Hi friends,

I want to upgrade the motherboard of my home office CPU with a new motherboard.

Current configuration:

P4 506J
Intel D915GAV
Hynix RAM 512 x 2== 1 GB
Samsung 80 GB IDE
Generic cabinet with generic PSU.

Already have a Kingstron 1 GB 667 stick

I have thought to go with Palit N73PV which will cost approximately Rs 2700.

Palit Microsystems, (HK) Ltd
Please give me your kind suggestions about this or any other better alternatives available.

Not a bad choice, Also consider the Gigabyte G31 S2L@ Rs. 2400(you can go for a better, discrete 3D card later)

PS: The processor is a 775 socket one, right?

Why would you wanna upgrade only the motherboard what kind of performance gain are you looking for ?

Lots of reasons,
1)His current board doesn't support anything beyond the Pentium 4's, but the new one will.
2)Faster DDR2 RAM will translate into better performance, his current Mobo supports DDR1
3)He might be on a budget, and hence wants to upgrade components one at a time. He'll buy the mobo and ram now, and eventually upgrade the processor, which i think is wise....

Get Gigabyte G31, stick to Intel chipset.
AFAIK the gigabyte G31 S2L doesn't support processors with 533mhzFSB...

You could consider Palit N73 or Asus P5NMX both boards based on nvidia chipset...

You're right, thanks for bringing this to light.

Your 915 GAV supports both 533 and 800 FSB processors. In which case, it doesn't make sense in moving on with a motherboard upgrade only/upgrading to a similar/downgrading to an inferior board. I'd like to revise what i suggested earlier, the following is what i suggest now :-

*You have hit a wall right now as far as upgrading is concerned, which roughly translates into the fact that you're going to have to invest a lot more at the same time to gain a meaningfull upgrade.
Basically, replace both the processor and the Motherboard.
Go for a Gigabyte G31 S2L+ any new 775 socket processor. This should set you back by atleast Rs. 5,000
Use your DDR2 667 stick till you feel you can invest in a 2x2GB kit.
Bottomline: Save up atleast Rs. 5,000 before you think of upgrading.

Second Option

*Keep the 915 GAV and sell your processor instead, and try picking up a used P4 800 Mhz 2MB cache Prescott. I do not recommend this, do it only if you absolutely cannot shell out the above and absolutely need to upgrade from what you're using currently, immediately. You can do a full upgrade (Processor+mobo+ram) later as required. Again, this option is not recommended, but this is the only midpoint between your config now, and the first suggestion.

Good luck and keep us posted :)

Hi amien,

Instead if selling mobo&processor he could sell his mobo which would fetch him about ~1k

Save that money&buy new mobo which would support this processor&later change the processor when he gets the moolah...

Also palitN73 isn't that bad i feel..&backed by its 3yrs warranty...Also nvidia 7050 gfx better than his current intel915...

@sidhupunjab any reason only going for intel chipset?

click on the links give by me, it is a complete list of processors supported by Gigabyte G31 chipset motherboards.

mate,i chkd it written N/A against your proccy..if you are keen on buying take processor with you before buying...

You are right, but I have a Asus P5S-MX SE motherboard with Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.73 GHz processor running system. I will put the Intel Pentium 4 506J with Asus P5S-MX SE motherboard, and I will put the Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.73 GHz processor with new Gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2L. By this, I think both the system performance will increase significantly.

How will be this idea?

But which mobo to to go GA-EG31M-S2L or GA-G31M-S2L??

Where to get Gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2L motherboard in Chandigarh at cheapest rate?

Went to Computer Fedrate, sector 18, to find it out. I was quoted Rs. 2444 GA-G31M-S2L. Gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2L was not there.

try to get in touch with amarbir paa'ji in our dealer's section. he has big computer store in Chandigarh.

Price is the issue!

Just compare the lynx prices with delta, lot of difference, plus delta quotes prices inclusive of VAT, so decrease the VAT amount, you get actual value. If you are not buying it with bill, you will get a lot cheaper.

Not only that, the other local shopkeepers are selling at lower prices, which are realistic and close to delta prices.

I talked to Mr. Amarbir. Due to some problem, he was not able to update his site and prices were not updated. Now, it is back on the track. It has more competitive prices than Delta, etc.

I have ordered one Gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2 motherboard from him. Guess, will receive in a few days.

Check:
G31 Chipset - Lynx Chandigarh Largest Electronic & Computer Superstore

mate do update whether your processor is being recognised by bios...AFAIK G31 chipset don't support processors with 533mhz FSB...
