PC Peripherals more HDD problems

just when i thought my life is great (getting the BIG 6600GT in 2 days :ohyeah: )..i begin noticing all sorts of problems.

i have two HDDs"
1) 3yr old Seagate 40GB
2) 8 month old Seagate 80 'cuda

both these disks are making a krrrrr krrrr noise when data transfer takes place (including bootup and launching of apps) :(..whats happening ?

do i have to get them replaced (atleast the newer one) ?

Smart is useless for seagate drives. It reports bogus values :P. Even a perfectly fine drive is reported as 40% fitness.

uh-oh..some kind of errors showin up..these are beyond my comprehension :huh:

^^ everything concurs with urs except for the read rate on the 40gig..its over 3yrs old now..soim guessing nothing serious with my newer drive either. Thanx a lot kumar :)

As shown in the paragraph above, SpeedFan tries to build two synthetic indicators, but this is based on heuristic and on some basic assumptions. Most manufacturers do not use values lower than 100 when any attribute needs no attention, but some other ones (most notably Seagate) chose to set values for some attributes to values lower than 100 even if the drive should be considered 100% healthy. This is something the manufacturer can do as the specs allow this. The specifications for S.M.A.R.T. require and state that any failing attribute is given a value lower than or, at least, equal to its associated threshold. Anything else should be considered working flawlessly.

ummm a little help for me please...my 6 months old Seagte 160gb harddisk is putting me in trouble.....sometimes the harddisk activity just keeps on going on continuesly and it leads to my pc freezing...occurs anytime...during bootup,scandisk...after bootup...no certain point...and sometimes dosent happen and everything runs fine...

Cant understand the problem..checked with various tools they all show hdd is fine..

is it begining to fail??

Did you try a check with seagate SeaTools? Its a free download from their site.
 
Seagate seatools would be the most thorough, its free and can be put onto a bootable floppy.

the "krrrr" "krrr" sound you hear could be what is called chattering. It is normal for some drives to do this when accesing data, especially WD drives. I believe seagate mentions this on their site..

There maybe bad sectors on ur drive or even some type of virii/trojan/spyware etc.As u said it can happen even at scandisk stage most probably its bad sectors causing prob......'neway check with seatools
 
In the 2 screenies both are showing 0 Reallocation sector count... is this not the same as 0 bad sectors ? ...Thats what I thought. :huh:

What about opening a CMD window and typing "chkdsk" this also shows bad sectors ... like so...

i've seen newer maxtor 120gb hard disks making kreaking noise also. though i always see seagate to be most Quiet.

just a suggestion from my side
Why not sell both these hard disks & get a 120gb from that money (may be a lil to add). The newer hdd's are most obviously the best in read/write.

I have a 120 160 and 250GB Maxtor drives and they are totally silent... no sound at all... if Maxtor drives make noise then they can be silenced with the Maxtor software AMSET. Or you can use the Hitachi Drives Feature Tool for silencing most brands of drives. However I understand that some models of Seagate drives do not have the silencing feature.
 
Well the reallocation will be 0.. when u format (low level) again then the bad sectors (if hard) will be reallocated. At that time you may find reallocation count more than 0.
Reallocation is done only at the time of formatting, bad sectors appear any time.
