Reallocation is done only at the time of formatting, bad sectors appear any time.
@KK .....can you clarify this for me......My understanding was that Reallocation of sectors start when there are bad sectors on a drive but if these are within the amount of the spare sectors which are normally available on most drives they will not show up in the bad sector count untill all the spare sectors on the drive are used up. Any comments on this ?
I have one old IBM 120GB drive (now DEAD) which was doing some writing and by mistake I switched off power to the computer before it had finished writing all the data - after this the drive started showing 6 Reallocated sectors even without my having formatted the drive. Till it died about 6 months later it kept showing 6 Reallocated sectors via any SMART checking software but it would not show any BAD sectors if I ran CHKDSK.
