PC Peripherals more HDD problems

Well the reallocation will be 0.. when u format (low level) again then the bad sectors (if hard) will be reallocated. At that time you may find reallocation count more than 0.
Reallocation is done only at the time of formatting, bad sectors appear any time.

@KK .....can you clarify this for me......My understanding was that Reallocation of sectors start when there are bad sectors on a drive but if these are within the amount of the spare sectors which are normally available on most drives they will not show up in the bad sector count untill all the spare sectors on the drive are used up. Any comments on this ?

I have one old IBM 120GB drive (now DEAD) which was doing some writing and by mistake I switched off power to the computer before it had finished writing all the data - after this the drive started showing 6 Reallocated sectors even without my having formatted the drive. Till it died about 6 months later it kept showing 6 Reallocated sectors via any SMART checking software but it would not show any BAD sectors if I ran CHKDSK.

I don't know what they mean exactly by "reallocation sectors" I assumed what they meant was, bad sectors replaced by available spare sectors. Well Reallocation traditionally takes place at format time. But strictly speaking, I guess it is hard drive controller dependent (the one integrated into the HDD). There is no reason why the controller on your drive (and IBM deskstar was a server product so it might understandably be advanced) should not dynamically replace the bad sectors with the spare ones.

Over at Sysinternals they have a few free utilities which give a real time list of activity of the HDDs and Files being accessed. Look thru their list here and see if you find a software on this site which may help you trace your problem....
