Hi

For
Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8
using -> Samsung 64GB microSDXC UHS-I card

How does one move apps to the external SD card ?

The best App Mgr III (App 2 SD) does not work
....Move apps function may not work on your device as manufacture removes the function of moving apps to SD from Android system (not support: S4, S DUOS, Note2, Tab 2, L5-L9, OneX, 7-10" tablet)....

I guess the devs need to add 'galaxy mega 5.8' to the above list :(
or
Is the 64GB microSDXC UHS-I card also a problem ?
My phone detects the card and shows 58.56GB available space.

Thanks
Terry

Its fiddly and requires root & custom app from XDA and still it does not completely work.

Have to wait for samsung to allow that functionality from a layman's perspective. They had realeased one for the S4 which has 4.2, limited funtionality though, chances are they will roll it out to other models when they get around to it. Most likely when the 4.3 update comes around.

This is not a micro SD card issue, its a manufacturer, app writer & android issue. Android cannot make up its mind whether it wants to allow this or not. Whatever workarounds exist are at best hacks and very app specific, some apps will vacate others are more stubborn.

Which apps do you want to move ? or better question is do you really need to.

Yeah, ~4GB usable can feel cramped after some time. If you thought hard drive manufacturers were notorious about their stated device storage space then mobile manufacturers take it to a whole other level.

As @blr_p said, you will need root access to get it to work, its like a pointer to the external SD card, AFAIK. The functionality should be enabled soon - 4GB is barely usable for most of the graphic heavy games.

Thanks @blr_p for putting it across so succintly...... but damm, DAMM, DAMM. I am again caught napping. I was not aware of this 'drawback' else would have gone in for at least 16GB internal mem phone.

I have gone through a 'storage-space' nightmare with my earlier phone (HTC Wildfire S) where I was constantly battling to keep 2-10MB free space (on it's miserable <150MB user space) . Now there are apps that can be moved and there are also those that stubbornly refuse to do so (on existing Android devices). Thus I could not dream of installing apps of my choice & survived the agony for two and a half years.

I do not want to go through the same nightmare with my new phone. But I gather there is no clear solution at the moment & I will have to be patient. I would have loved to transfer all such apps/games (that can be moved onto the SD card), keeping only the most frequently used ones on built-in memory. Gradually over a period of time & as the internal mem fills up .... I do not want the performance of the phone to be affected.

Now Would Samsung issue a patch ? (I doubt it - as they have not resolved it with their earlier models)
What are the chances of 4.2.2 upgrades to Key Lime Pie ?

bandhu @vivek.krishnan ....... rooting gives me the jitters & in this case it still does not completely work (apart from causing new headaches for other apps).

Life is shure F@%*kD up .... no matter how much you spend - there are always some major flaws that are left behind. Beats me why this elementary functionality is not a given on android devices.

Some apps/games can't be moved to SD card AFAIK but this is not related to 4.2.2 or it is i am not sure.

Since last phone i owned that has SD card slot was htc explorer and i used the app called "Link to SD" which creates some address in the phone memory and keep nearly all unmovable apps on SD card. For that a rooted device is must.

Will flipkart allow an exchange within 30 days ?

I have to think good, as your mega 5.8 model has 1.5GB RAM instead of just 1GB.

thats the beauty with Major Android devices.

Its like Apple, you have best possible features but you cant have one damn radio.. Users crave for more & wait for such features even after spending 40k+ :)

Can't you move apps from their info panel? From ics, there's option to move an app to storage. Unless Samsung went all the way to disable it, option should be there.

Err ... exchange wot  . I got my phone locally from magnet & just the 64GB microSDXC from FK. Besides, I also needed a 'dual-sim' phone & AFAIK ... there is'nt a better phone than the Mega (jelly bean 4.2.2 + 1.5Gb ram + dual sim + 8GB internal storage). I was never drawn to all those 'other brands' - karbonn et al

Nada .....as @Pranav.Falcon has already specified. It is disabled from the basic 'applications' menu itself. Samsung is moving in the sick path that Apple has followed all along. I am actually surprised and shocked that non of the previews or reviews mentioned this most essential drawback.

This feature was disabled from the start of Jellybeans i guess...
When my friend purchased the S3, I was shocked to see this feature missing...but had to live with it.
My Note 2 also doesn't have this feature...hope we get a workaround soon.

Why ? its scary when you don't know what you're getting into. Make no mistake there is a learning curve here.

What if you attempted rooting with your wildfire S. Out of warranty by now.

Android gives you options, which are not there (yet) on other platforms. Requires some time & tinkering.

Way i see it you can get more storage but you need to know enough about it to get it working. And enough to deal with any issues that may arise. This sort of thing is best suited for a backup phone rather than your main daily driver.

This is not point & click layman like.

@blr_p

I do not think I have the gall to try out any such alternatives (rooting).

The Mega 5.8 will be my 'only' mode of communicating with my family for a few months (moving abroad for work). The old Wildfire S will be used by my wife or daughter..... and they would be clueless to handle any hiccups in my absence.

So until such time as 'samsung' or 'google' comes out with a certified solution. I will use the built-in 'File Manager' to transfer my own files [songs; videos; pics; docs to the SD card]. For 'apps' will have to live with this limitation.

I just need a clarification here @paarkhi; @Pranav.Falcon (since you both have similar samsung devices)
If I move the paths using "My Files" (samsung widget) from 'device storage/internal mem' to 'sd memory card' for
-> Images; Videos; Music; Documents
then would this new address stay permanently ?
(I do not want new files to go into 'internal mem' by default)

@terence_fdes, Sorry for waking up the sleeping Dragon (Dinosaur in this case ;)) but can you please share your experience of using Mega with me because I'm also planning to purchase this phone for my elders (I know that internal memory is too low but I'll root it so that may not be a problem and they don't play games or install many apps) so is there any other drawback on this phone apart from the low internal memory?
I need a Dual Sim phone hence thinking about it.
Thanks in advance for answering...

Sorry bro, I just saw ur msg today. I rarely access TE over the comp these days (its mostly thru the TE app on android .... and I did not see any alerts there).

The Mega 5.5 .... ROCKS .... I would'nt recommend rooting it. Just install the right apps to take care of your android phone {App Mgr III, Clean Master etc} ..... There is no lag whatsoever.

These days I even watch 720p or 1080p movies on it ..... as I am now based in Malaysia (and miss my home 47" lol). I have a 64GB SDXC card installed.

Pictures/Image quality is mind-blowing.

Ciao
Terry

I am facing a unique issue after landing in Malaysia .... I deleted all my old sms'es and NOW not a single sms is getting saved.
