Mozilla has also announced TCL Communication Technology and ZTE as its first partners to manufacture phones running Firefox OS .

The first Firefox OS-powered devices will run a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and are expected to launch in Brazil in early 2013 via Telefónica's Vivo service, Mozilla said.

Mozilla said today the project , "unlocks many of the current limitations of web development on mobile, allowing HTML5 applications to access the underlying capabilities of a phone, previously only available to native applications."

This will allow for "the removal of unnecessary middleware layers," and help drive down the cost of the phones, Mozilla said.

^^ Looks very basic, Why would anyone buy a phone with this OS when android is also open source ?

It all depends upon the level to which this statement hold true
help drive down the cost of the phones

^ ^ It'll need some time to develop. Nor Android or for that matter neither WP hit the road running when they were launched, it took them approx 2 years to reach a level where it could compete with others.

The positive thing which I can currently derive from this is that it's open source & is being developed by a non-profit organisation. :)

it's very nice to see that despite a few players holding a monopoly in the smartphone os market,it has not dethered new players from making an entry and try to make a name for themselves.

as for this being a bare basic o.s,many companies try to fit in android even when the hardware is not at a level to give the user an optimized experience.a bare basic o.s could absolutely prove vital for such phones whose users have a primary need for only the essential functions.

Brave but I highly doubt that they'd be able to compete with Android, WP or iOS in anything less than 2 years.

They should be concentrating on developing their browser instead. We have many OS for mobile to choose from, I highly doubt someone would go with Firefox OS when there are Android, WP and iOS.

I would say bring it on.
Considering the of evolution of phones from just ASCII to fully equipped smart phones, i would say we should be provided with more options,
Imagine when there would be lot of options for dual booting, triple booting our good phones.Better features, better performance, etc.
Am sure this would be happening very soon in the years to come
