it does help for further education.. atleast in my college it did..

we had an exchange program wiht the german govt wherein they sent students for internships in germany for a semester.

half the bunch that went for it, came back finished the course and went back to germany to work/study.

but then.. it aint easy to get such things.. limited seats and all..

@rite/whoever wants to plan for higher studies.... get into any damn college man. doesnt make a diff. work your ass off though.. and then think about higher studies.. you are planning wayyyy too much in advance

so i have asked many, people do you really think it matters when I am applying for MS if I am from Manipal univ instead to maharaja agrasen.... coz lots of people are saying that manipal is a well known indian university abroad.... I am a delhi resident, so do you think it makes sense to leave delhi, so that i would have an edge over other applicants of similar credentials??? also does anyone have an idea about how the people at maharaja agrasen are placed....

please help me ASAP as i am distressed

Dude, don't worry about the college. The only thing that matters most are the SOP, Experiance (Research and work), GRE, Acads, TOEFL in that order.

so you think i should leave delhi ( my hometown) for manipal..... also does anyine know how manipal placemnts are like as compared to maharaja agrasen ( IP universoty delhi)

^^I would put the priority list (at least theoretically) as

Acads + Experience(esp. research)
SOP + Recos
GRE + TOEFL (do not matter once above a certian level )

listen to the man! :)

go out there an chill(without screwing your grades :P) for a couple of years then, when you actually know what your major is about - decide if you wanna study it at the next level

okay ppl do you have any idea about the placements of manipal as compared to maharaja agrasen... i am sking this coz if i plan to work before my masters.....

Things that count for MS -

Performance in Graduate Degree (performance up to grad degree does not matter)

GRE/TOEFL Score

RELEVANT extra curricular activities/papers published etc

Recos + SOP

Work Exp - again if it is relevant to the course

Provable Financial Liquidity

getting admission is not that big an issue - 60% aggregate + ~1300 GRE is good enough to get into Stanford. Are u drunk? buddy seriously you need to get your facts right

Scholarship is not at all likely in the 1st year depends on the university and your overall profile- if you excel in the 1st year, you may get for the 2nd year

AFAIK if the grad institute is not an IIT/IISc - it does not become a factor for admission. Most of the ivy league uni. prefer good known reputed universities IIT is surely an advantage

Ofcourse in institutes of lower renown the chances of scholarship go up.

To get in the top 5 you need a lot of publications, technical research papers and all the bling bling... GRE score and acads are just a cutoff criteria

thanks a lot agent 47, so i should join manipal instead of IP university, as manipal is more known as compared to IP universoty

@agent47

I should have quantified that remark. :ashamed:

I was talking about MECH engineering - if the major is different then the requirements go up or down.

Apologies for the incomplete data provided. :)

If a person has a good academic record in school, 90%+ throughout and decent with extracurricular activities like Member of School Computer Club etc(DPS RKP), if he joins the one of the best colleges in IP University in Delhi (Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Information Technology) and performs good and applies for MS in the Ivy League. Do you think he can get admission and scholarship there? Assuming a good record throughout.
This is for a friend...
EXUN huh? I was the head and co-founder of the computer club in my school, and we attended the annual EXUN computer fest twice. :)

Someone said that a person could get into Stanford with a 1300+ GRE score.

It depends on the course for which the person wishes to join.

Talking about MS, MS in IT in much in demand by Indians, but not much by the ppl there (I could be wrong).

So I heard that 1400 score can lead to admit for MS in IT in the top end (Stanford, etc).

SOP does matter.

I knew a guy who got perfect score in GRE, but didnt get admit into MIT because of a poor SOP.

^^^ gre/toefl scores are just used as a cutoff unless you have scored exceptionally i.e >1560...your overall profile is what matters the most...

The university matters as the Admission community in US knows about the better uni. in india and they know there grading system and all, so they can evaluate your profile accordingly, as the guys in US know it is far more difficult to get in IIT than any other university so they prefer them over others, i myself have done my B.tech from kurukshetra university and would be applying for MS CS for the next fall and i got 1430 in GRE, and a student with the same profile eg. from mumbai university would be preferred over me.

If you want more information you can check Edulix.com, they have a large database of users profiles from different uni with different GRE scores and the uni(US) in which they got admitted.

[OT] @agent_47: Do share some tips on preparing for GRE :)

What i did was to mug up the barrons word lists and did the maths section from barrons and as well as from nova, for the AWA section i read few essays from GRE Bible software and i actually got the same essay which i read in GRE Bible, so i would recommend to use that software and also for maths do check the testmagic forums gre math subsection, it is really resourceful and you will clear a lot of your doubts there about the tricky questions one could expect in actual GRE.

For vocab practice you could use
Free GRE Vocabulary Practice Tests

and for mock tests i did some of the tests from Big book and some from majortests.com and the finally the two GREPREP tests.

hope this helps

Yes it helps a lot :)

* For maths isn't powerprep + barron + NOVA enough? Anyways will checkout

the forum.

* I am also doing GRE Bible. Hoping to get lucky :)

* Is mugging barron's wordlist insane? My friend who recently gave GRE

told me that he got lot of words outside barron's list. So he suggested

me to improve reading and analysis of words (word power thing) instead.

So I am slightly confused.

* Any tips for AWA preparation? ( or just reading GRE Bible would be enough?)

So I am slightly confused. well i got all the words from the barrons word lists, and max you will get is 1 or 2 other words but thats is totally based on luck.

For AWA i was also very confused but after going through the analytical Issues of GRE bible i began to get hold of it and reading few essays from it added a bit of confidence in me, that i could do that part and finally ended with 4.0 in the AWA section.

what if i start doing the word power book from the first year itself??? wouldnt it be better as compared to mugging the entire word list of barrons
