MTNL Bill of 12k

Hey guys,

So my brother has a mtnl connection with DSL_849 Night Unlimited plan & 1.25GB limit, I had thought that the timing changed to 8pm to 8am instead of the usual 10pm to 8am. so i told him last month & he started using the broadband without keeping tabs on his usage and at month end we have a total bill of 12k, this 12k was for month of March & the next bill amount for April is also 12k, there is about 10Gb download in 1 month.

I pay his bills cause he pays for house loan, and i am no way going to pay that 24k. So what are my options? What is MTNL going to do/ can do apart from the obvious that they would disconnect the line?

I would have paid if it was used for anything useful / work related but 24k for just crap downloads is not worth it.
 
Similar thing happened at my family at chennai as well.. Bro messed it up.. My father went to Chennai Bsnl office and shouted at them saying he can't pay this much and ask them to disconnect immediately.. At the end, we got into some tradeoff (since we are 15 yr old customer) and they changed our connection to unlimited type and asked us to pay the amount only for that unlimited connection... Instead of 5k, we paid only 1k.

You can try the same.. I am sure this won't happen in any private isp.
 
if the total bill includes the download between the free hours then you can visit the nearest QCS with the copy of your downloads stating that the bill has mistakenly included the download for the free hours too. This happened in my case, i got a bill of 5k which included the download from 12am to 8am(back in 2009). My Dad discussed this issue and it was agreed that MTNL would re-adjust the following bills untill 5k was due.
 
Is it MTNL delhi ?

if it is , i have email id of a person who handles the billing department

And yes he does replies within a day .
 
@sbhas2k Thanks, That's what i am hoping for, that we tell mtnl that we cannot pay that much amount, and either get them to disconnect us completely / settle at a lower price.

@tejas01 The amount / usage is not included in the usage history unless you cross the limited time e.g. if you turn off your pc at 8:10 am from the time MTNL connection was reset lets say 6 am, you usage will be counted from 6am - 8:10am & added to the bill

And I thought you guys were smart! This is the exact reason I went for unlimited connection rather than a limited one with free downloads at night. There are too many hassles like switching on and off the router etc.

Anyways, would suggest to speak and tell them to cut the line OR put you on an unlimited connection as suggested.

A similar incident happened to my neighbour around 4/5 years back and hence did not go for the same scheme of limited internet. I shall ask my neighbour as to what they did.
 
My friend had a similar incident with MTNL. The bill wasn't so massive, but it was close to 11k. He promptly ordered the disconnection of the line and never paid up. After almost 7 years, he re-applied for a new line under his mum's name and got it re-connected. Those guys didn't even perform a background check for his past dues.

BSNL and MTNL offer 'SAMADHAN ' or similarly named scheme . It waives off all the disputed charges and converts your plan to unlimited . There is no jugad required here , its legal and scheme has been taken out by the PSU , only thing is that exchanges dont advertise it so often . heres the link for BSNL http://bsnl.co.in/service/bbtariff/special_relief_scheme.htm , might be named differently for MTNL . I dont remember the name so check it out . dont look at dates its always available

come on man atleast you should have gone to mtnl delhi site the first link is http://mtnldelhi.in/amnesty_221211.htm AMNESTY SCHEME , go to exchange and talk to them
 
I have personally never done it for broadband but know people who have done it for MTNL delhi broadband

One has to reset the modem at 8:00 PM and at 8AM. If you dont do this they calculate the total amount of data that was downloaded, calculate the total time for which it was downloaded and then calculate the data downloaded per-hour. Then they'll subtract the free-hours for which the router was ON and multiply the remaining hours with data downloaded/hour figure. This is mentioned in their plan's detail under the fine print. You should've read more carefully, this is an unjust method followed by MTNL plainly because they dont have a stated system to do so and MTNL employees are sarkari type who dont know shit and dont want to do anything extra(It's very easy you have to schedule a router to reboot at specific time intervals).

You are lucky for having good employees at MTNL. If anything goes bad here, I've to go and get stuff done myself!! for the whole area!!, they even find it hard to understand the user manuals that are provided to them.

And just like vivek.krishnan said it's always better to go for full unlimited connections as at least now we have a choice, unlike 2 years back.

Happened to me in BSNL since I was on a limited plan but had applied for unlimited connection and thinking that my unlimited connection was already started from the day I applied I started downloading stuff and ended up with 6k bill. However went and disputed with the staff in BSNL and took many days but finally just got only the bill for the unlimited plan. Hence take this to the head if you can and don't deal with the lower staff since they just like to harass people.

i got a bill for 1lac 97 thousand odd. this was the pre dsl, DIAS times.

luckily i was in the US for work, and no one else used internet at my home

i went to the office, met the senior most guy, he looked at the bill and standardized it based on last 6 months usage.

in my case it wasn't data usage, apparently, there were some issues with the dias modem, which kept on activating the phone line due to the data voice filter not working, we were charged for 1lac 60 thousand odd calls, can you believe it.

my dad did ask me to pay the bill and inquired if i had dollars to settle the bill, once i was back - i bunked office for 2 days - the bill kinda scr3w3d me psychologically!!

got a bill of 15k.

did not pay up.

got free internet for 5 months

then after the 6 month the line was disconnected . after 10 months the line man took away the mtnl router.

no correspondence from them since then
