MTNL's Crappy adsl routers

Its too early for me to say anything about my Dlink coz i purchased it myself and quite recently!!:P
Touchwood, God Forbid,...

But once the Triband service engineer came to check for some wiring issues and in fact congratulated me for getting my own Dlink router!!

He mentioned that he was having a harrowing time with the new UTstar routers, some of them crapping out within weeks of installation!!

Since i didn't have any evidence to prove this, i preferred to just subtly imply getting the Dlink, which you will see in one of my replies to Stick's query in an earlier thread!!:cool2:

as i said b4.. dlink routers. .with a firmware V2.00B01T01.ML.20050530 .. are stable.. anything b4 this had lots of problems.. that is if ya try to mess around with the settings then the router would conk off... sometimes people had problems with it even if all they wanted to do was forward thier ports!!!

the ones with newer firmware all work fine and are all sturdy and stable.

this might well be the problem with the new starcom modems!

btw bikey.. so you got your own router.. how much time it took for em to give you a connection?

I do not think that only Dlink works... I was a user of Dlink DSL 502T but had some problems of booting with it... (I am hunting for a service manual to service it) i am yet to service it.. Meanwhile I got a cheap SMC router which i configured personally it was working fine until one fine day the router failed to get ON when i checked it I found that the ON/OFF switch is not functioning well..so i did a direct connection i mean shorted the open lead..its working fine..!!!!! No problems,,,,!!!!

And mind you MTNL guys say that the Dlink is a best router... You know they have a MTNL monogram engraved on it!!! and they charge you Rs.80/- per month as rentals (with 10.2% Service Tax which will now be amended to effective service charges at 12.24% on the rentals!!!) so imagine what loss are u going to have... even if you purchase your own router MTNL still bills you for the modem rentals...!!! Check your monthly bill if you find discrepancy then write a letter to the SDE, MTNL of your area for the refund / adjustments of the rentals with the Service Tax!!!! They do it...now the image of MTNL is better than the bygone days...!!!!!

And its a lot better than anyother service provider ..( if you have the grit of facing musclemens for collection of dues...then you can go for private service providers!!!)

So better stay with MTNL and your own router doesn't matter......:D

Hey karkeravs-
Touchwood, but this is news to me!!:P

Hey Chic_magnet-
It actually takes hardly 30 mins to 1 hr, that too at their own sweet pace- to create an account, do the relevant jumpering at the exchange and get confirmation/activation from main server!!

I was promised connection in a day, after i showed them my new router at the exchange!! :)

But when it didn't happen even after 4 days:@ - due to one public holiday and a sunday- i had to call my uncle whom i didn't want to bother initially with such silly task :P !!

He sent a man from his Dept to do the jumpering, called and got the account created:clap: !!

In 10 mins my ADSL line was up- just like he had promised when i first spoke to him on the issue!!:cool2:

i think around 1600 bucks.. read somewhere.. ..

and oh karkeravs . .mtnl doesnt charge you for modem rentals when you own your own router... my friend owns his own dlink router.. and he doesnt have to pay the 80 bucks. its just 590+ tax for him! :)

What is a cost of Dlink DSL 502T in open market at Mumbai?

Is any cheaper option availbale to it?

Thanks

Dealer recommended by dlink said- 2450/-:@

8 dealers (in LR and Andheri) said- 2300/-

2 in andheri said- 2200/-:)

Finally got 2routers for me and pal, for 2100/- from a dealer in Andheri(w), in Feb end!!:ohyeah:
Dealer's first quote was of 2100/-, for any no. of pieces!!
Didn't yield inspite of bargaining by me on phone and face to face by pal, for 2days!!:P

Recently friend got quote of 2000/- from his friend, who's a dealer too!!
so you might get it for 2k or lower, if you bargain well!!:cool2:

modem shows status as UP and IP is also enabled but you are not able to surf sites or downlaod anything

This is the problem I read somewhere in the following post.

The solution is:
Change the DNS server. It is coz of DNS servers,I faced this problem a lot in the begining. You can use the following DNS server 4.2.2.1 with 127.0.0.1 as alternate one.Hope it solves your problem

mtnltriband,

The MTNL DNS servers and the connection in general works fine for most users. Why are you fiddling around with everything ? If I were you, I would get a MTNL ( or any other ) networking guy to setup / check your connection and modem. I would also ensure that the OS ( win xp ? ) has been installed properly.
