My hard disks are filling up real quick and I am at a point where I go around deleting stuff in the ascending order of importance. I do have enough spill-over space in my other HDDs but that is not going to last. Writing to DVDs is not fun. And neither is hunting for one to retreive something I need.

So I thought of upgrading my 1TB Hitachi "storage" drive to 2TB, but it seems 2TB drives are costlier than getting two 1.5TB drives. So I am going with the two-1.5TBs-in-one-enclosure option and I will need a HDD enclosure to house them. HDD racks/enclosures are something new to me, but here are a few things I want in one:

  • Support for atleast two hdds of the sata-II variant.
  • Support for JBOD. It is ok too if I can see the individual drives as individual partitions.
  • e-sata interface is optimal. Ethernet/firewire support...maybe. USB support is optional but is sub-optimal as a primay connector.
  • I don't know if e-sata come in "powered" variant. If not, ac-power is good enough.
  • Obviously, support for hot-swapping.
  • Must be reasonably priced. <5K is reasonable.
Please help a n00b buy his first HDD enclosure.

Are there no local options available? I have looked at a few models on newegg/amazon but want to try locally first.

I have sent a similar request to Delta peripherals and am waiting for a reply. Mahavir computers only had a single drive enclosures with them the last time I saw. Any online dealers on this forum can help me out?

DO you want to use both the HDDs simultaneously...?? If NO, then maybe you could settle for a HDD dock that costs less than 2K only. I had recently reviewed my new Sunbeamtech HDD dock, and there are quite a few people in the forum using the Vantec docks. These are good, and real VFM if you are one who has plenty of HDDs. They come with USB and eSATA connectivity, and need an external power source. COnsider getting one of these if your requirement permits.
