Multiple UAN possible?

So the situation is this:
I left my job last Oct. When I switched my new company asked for UAN. I did not know about it and had to go back to the last employer. I did finally get it and let my new employer know. Now here I made a mistake in not following up on it. The main purpose for this was the PF transfer. With UAN the transfers were not required and same account could be used.

Now it turns out I have been assigned new PF account and my company has raised for a new UAN. Will EPFO recognize and assign me the old UAN? This will help me in not filing forms for PF transfer and all. Or is there a chance of duplicate UAN and lengthy process of PF transfers

Your new employer can submit a letter to the RPFC requesting the old UAN be removed/ merged with the new one. Transfer it. Dont withdraw. If you have contributed for less than 5 years, it will become taxable as salary upon withdrawal.

RPFC= Regional Provident Fund Office. It can be located here http://search.epfoservices.org:81/locate_office/office_location.php

There is no form number for this, since its a request for something not standard by design.

If i may ask, what city are you in? (both for previous employment and current employment)
Ah ok, my bad. Both former and current employment is based out of Bangalore. I tried talking to my HR and he says I need a new PF but the petitioned UAN will automatically go and attach to already existing one as it is supposed to be "unique".

You need a new pf code from your organisation. however your UAN will remain unchanged throughout your working life. your PF code will simply be linked to your singular UAn number.

First of all if your new company is based in the same city they had no business to open a new PF account. They should have used the existing one. Anyways. UAN is same for any no of PF accounts you have so go ahead and login to your UAN account and see if you can see both your PF accounts there. Then visit your city PF account and get the PF transferred and close the old account.

Thats not true. You open a new pf account every time you change jobs (so long as the employer is covered under the EPF and MP Act 1952). However, like i have stated above, only one UAN will exist for your entire life time. Your pf numbers will simply be merged into the UAN number.

If old and new company is in same city then he can transfer the same account. Ofcourse the Ac no will change since every company gets their own code but under neath you actually have same account. Also it shows on your passbook that it was transferred.

Don't many cities have multiple PF offices which not only cause the A/C no but even the PF offices to change. My last one was BG/BNG now the new one is PY/BOM.

I have logged into the UAN account and till now it shows only the last PF account. I tried looking up the UAN status for the current PF at: http://uanmembers.epfoservices.in/check_uan_status.php and it says UAN is in process via ECHR (what does this means?)

Then I tried to do a transfer and it instead re-directs me to: http://memberclaims.epfoservices.in/ which says "A member has an option to submit his claim either through his present employer or the previous one." So basically I can't file a transfer claim myself. Though in UAN there seems to be "System Generated Transfer Claim Status". Any ideas what this really is?

No idea about ECHR. Recently my company started printing my UAN no below the PF ac. no on my payslip. Also they have (on behalf of all employees) updated the KYC docs on the UAN site.
Ask your Finance team or your Payroll vendor. They might be able to help you with it.
PF transfer / withdrawals generally happen via employers only. They have to confirm the change in employment to the PF office and this could generally take about little more than a month.
But your finance dept or payroll vendor would be the best person to answer all your queries accurately.
As for your query about UAN it will not be duplicate and will be one only.
