I bought a box packed Altec Lansing Mx-5021 speakers,yesterday.
The black beauties prestinely placed inside their packages.Everything was in place in and so serene.
Then,lastly..I grabbed the massive Sub baby in my arms...
and as some thing,,,bumped or partially slid out...
I scrubbed my hands to find fine,,powdered foam pieces,,,
only to find that the sub driver...was revealing outside,,with all the screws uncorking themselves...and the ring above the sub,,,and the grille slid away...
But..the sub..itself was being bound by the extreme magnetic force,,,that held that circular part...and i could clearly see where the foam particles had trickled from..they were two massive foamy like stuffs on both sides of the heart of the sub unit...
then....
I gasped some breath,,,recovered a phillips screwdriver from somewhere...
and neatly placed back the main BASS organ..by corking all the four screws...
and then i thrusted the white ring..to fit it peacefully in it;s place...
and further,,I pushed the grille back into the place,,where IT belonged...
I turned them on and was/am completely satisfied the 5021 unit I recieved thus,,but I heard minor vibrations in subwoofer..sometimes(But then,I read that this is the only negative point for the MX 5021s")

NOW>>>

The crux of the story remains:

what I encountered was..with my new baby...is a normal thing..?????????some minor mishandling on someone's fault..or is IT something really concerning,,and worth the hue and cry:huh:

Again...SANGRAM,,I beckon your words of wisdom.......

the quality of MX has dropped down i got mine some time back in may on day 1 they kaput:@ thanks to saiyan:D who helped me to RMA them ,got get the MX RMAed

It's not normal.

Was this 'substance' yellowish or black in ncolour?
the substance was yellowish in colour...it was basically the crumbs of the yellowish foam(sponge like thing)..that's placed inside the sides of the subwoofer,,,i thought it's a meagre thing,,,and shrugged it away!
I should better get in touch with my dealer for RMA?!?!?!?!?!

It's the particle board that's used to make the cabinet, and it's crumbling. Some mechanical shock has loosened the driver from its mounting, or it was not mounted securely in the first place, and some movement has caused it to tear out from the front panel.

When you screwed the subwoofer back, did you use the holes that were already there?

First contact your dealer and see if they'll take the set back, since you have technically tampered with the set.

It's not a very big issue from a long-term perspective, but you'll have to remove the driver and reattach it to the cabinet wall, but rotate it slightly so the screws have new wood to bite into. Don't reuse the existing holes, as at high output levels the driver frame will vibrate since it isn't secured properly to the walls. Fill the existing holes with some m-seal to prevent air leakage through them.

Doing this will definitely void the warranty though, so I would first suggest trying out the RMA.

This puts paid to any recommendations I will ever make for the MX5021, btw. I can't accept such shoddy build quality issues, whatever the capabilities of the electronics and the drivers might be.

I got my s/w of the MX5021 in exactly the same condition as yours..

Tightened the screws and the ring around the woofer was pushed to lock them in place and good to go. :P

Bad handling I guess. :(

yes...i used the existing holes and i felt a little weird while seeing these holes..they looked like they were drilled mechanically..and i could see the caved out wood brushing the hole inner sides,,,
and does fixing(tightening) screws with a system that was never laid properly,,void my warranty???
and regarding your suggestion,,about drilling newer holes,,,I dont need volume levels above 50% or so,,as I had said earlier,,that i have a small 'hostel' room...so i dont think do that extra bit...
and lastly about the RMA...does it has some time limit..within these many days..for new system,,,my dealer said I would get round about 10-11 months warranty,,during purchase!!!
and lately,,,how many days that might take...as i dont want to get deprived of my babe...for so long,,just after i built my new RIG!!!

P.S.-Even the remote provided is not functioning, with the bundled cell that was provided.I would try them by some other cell today:|

bad handling by me???
but i just removed them from their thermocol stuffed around them...and it does takes an effort to lift the sub...as they were placed upside down in the box..
and while i was opening the main box...the first thing that glanced my eyes..while seeing the outer box...was "MADE IN CHINA,ENGINEERED IN THE US".......perhaps,,that was an OMEN!!!!!!:angel1:

and regarding you,,also getting the similar treatment,,i guess how many,,have encountered the same,...maybe we could have a poll:tongue:

^^ lol.. he wasn't talking about your handling, but the Rashi personnel's handling/transportation. :@

You have got a damaged piece. You can easily get a replacement. :)

see this Query regarding MX5021

I got mine within 2 weeks. If you're from bangalore I can help you out.

IMO it's not build quality issue, but the bad handling.

iam from calicut.i read thru ur post...and the great thing is that i wouldnt have to send back my old unit..untill the new ones come back,,,but do i need to unscrew the sub,,once again..to make it look like as genuine case of bad handling...or it may be treated as meachanical tampering as sangram said>>>>

there's an UPDATE:

the remote is working...but i hear humming(tweeterish) noise,,,probably interference from other computer components,,at high volumes...with no song playing....

nope you don't have to do anything with the sub.

just get the e-mail id/ contact no. of rashi at calicut. Tell them about the condition of the sub you got. They'll ask for serial no and then things should be fine.

Many of the sub are coming in the same condition as you and me got, that's what the guys at rashi, bangalore told me.

So a new MX5021 buyer should check it at the shop itself. :P

Normal again, if you're using the bundled cables and/or onboard soundcard.

am using bundled cables...if not,,,which ones..and what would be the damage$??
and soundcard-creative sb audigy live 5.1/7.1 entry level card..as advised by other forum guys,,,

^^^^ truly speaking till the source used is quite good, there is no use of soundcard.

I can't find any difference b/w my onboard Realtek ALC888 and M-Audio Audiophile 2496 paired with MX5021 using mp3 128kbps.

Though there is difference when I use mp3 320kbps, and there is huge difference when I listen to online radio.

So if you are going to use mp3 128kbps, stick to onboard.

I have most content in mp3 audio.but Iam shifting to Flac(lossless audio) slowly and HD content. And btw,I already have Soundblaster Audigy Value(check!) soundcard..
And what kind of audio does online radio stream(variable bit rate, how much)
and what Kind of music, bands you listen too.
Have placed the email to Rptech,Calicut office.which is:
I recently bought a Altec Lansing MX 5021 2.1 Speakers from Technomake,Calicut.
The serial number is:82190 SHEU001375(manufactured in Hong Kong.)
the speakers where box packed and completely sealed. But when I opened the box.and removed the subwoofer unit.
I found that the subwoofer cabinet was completely unscrewed, the front grill was open,,and as if all the things,,including sunwoofer driver, the circular ring ,the grille and the screws were unattached.
even the yellowish foam(sponge like substance) placed inside on both sides, from the particle board that's used to make the cabinet is crumbling. My hands were full of these crumbs when I held those "tored down" subwoofer unit.
the holes which had been drilled in the cabinet looked bit caved out,as if mechanically drilled and probably indicating that the driver was not placed properly in the first place.
but then,
I didnt expect this from a box packed speakers packed by Rashi peripherals.
And,I have screwd back the unit,,and placed the grill for now.
But Iam seriously dissapointed with the such issues from such a good quality speakers. And considering that such build issues are ocurring during the purchase ,I doubt what future this equipment beholds.
So, I want to get a RMA,,replacement for the same.

Kindly look into this matter,as it's matter of branding for both Altec lansing and Rashi peripherals.

the same freakin thing happened to me!!!
bought the speakers 3 weeks bak frm nehru plc..box packed
and the driver is sticking out of the sub...the top screw is fit while the other three are uncorked..
my.php

the driver goes bak to fit easily in the sub but it pops out at mid-high levels of bass.. :( and vibrates like crazy
i wud send it in for rma but i've removed the mesh grills from my satellites...does this void my warranty???
