Storage Solutions My 7200.11 500gb down

Disciple
my fully filled 500gb HDD is not getting detected,

If someone can tell me,
1. how to confirm that its dead?
2. where is the Seagate`s RMA center in East Delhi?
3. How long will they take get me a replacement?
4. Will the replacement be a new drive?
5. Is there any affordable way to get my data back ( i can spend 3k)?

that will be very helpful to me.
thank you

AFAIK Seagate RMA will happen only in NP.

They will give you a new drive within a weeks, usually 2-4days.

send it to amarbir for data recovery, doing that will effectively void ur warranty

buy new 500gb from those 3k

Possible Fixes

My dead hard drive story

macosxhints.com - Freeze a dead hard drive to copy its data

Possible uses of a dead drive

1) Maglev (take off heads, use one of the actuator magnets)

2) Hard drive speakers (see Afrotech's site for this one)

3) Novelty paperweight (take off lid, fill with casting resin)

4) Novelty keyring (old Microdrives work well for this)

5) Exhibit in computer museum

6) Drive failure mode analysis

7) Send back to manufacturer and get new drive under warranty

8) Strip down for useful connectors and SMD tantalums

9) Bulk sell the PCB's on Ebay for data recovery purposes

10) Sell them on Ebay for £0.99 each as "Faulty"

11) Fix them with Spinrite 6.0 and sell as refurbished drives

12) Stress relief (spin up to insane RPM and hit with hammer) -> I'd do this :crash:

13) Novelty doorbell (put button in centre of platter)

14) Doorstop

15) Pack with Thermite and light it to see how much is left of drive

16) Maglev train (same principle as *1 but a row of them)

17) Miniature centrifuge (take off platters, add tube carrier unit)

18) Time capsule (write data, seal in durable case then bury in

concrete)

19) Laser scanner (glue mirrors to the spindle motor/actuator arm)

20) Tesla Turbine (nice flat platters- might work!)

21) Spin-coating machines

22) Gyroscopes for small satellites

23) Ultra-high RPM sanding machines

24) CD Destroyer (fix CD clamp to spindle motor and pin to head arm)

25) Strip spindle motors out, and use for small R/C helicopters

26) High efficiency motors for solar water pumps

27) Attach propellors and use as wind turbines

Best of luck

I wasnt implying that at all.

I don't want to make this about WD or seagate but,

Seagate drives are equally as bad/good as WD, with the exception of 7200.11's, though that too has been resolved.

You hear segate drivers failing more, because seagate sells more in india, a couple of years back they had a whopping ~70% market share in india.

ya Mohit,

I am Seagate fan from 7 years but cant think of loosing 1 TB of data.

Entering WD market now

getting prepared to loose more ? Seagate is seagate , legendary - nothing comes closer........ok it might be the seagate fanboy in me......ok have to agree on their mess up lately with the 1 / 1.5Tb and the ever dying 500gigs, nothings a problem !....

i was so heavily flamed on mentioning this fact here : http://www.techenclave.com/storage-solutions/which-hdd-to-buy-3-hrs-125284.html ....and after that i've atleast seen a dozen threads on 500gigs going kaput left and right......

personally , seagate is still a safe bet :) , i know a friends HDD which crashes religiously after 2-3 gaming sessions of NFSMW  he stopped gaming on the system cause WD kept sending him the HDD of the same series which caused the hdd to die after a nice race session , crazy but true........

@ voltas : if data is really valuable u can risk the warranty part and switch the PCB from a working HDD and try.

yeah, i will try to get my data back by switching the PCB.

Data is too important for me.

This month hasnt been good for me rig, my palit 4850 went kaput few days back now this, maybe its the heat.

No more gaming this month.

BEFORE doing anything to a dead hdd, always contact the support, explain the problem, even send it in for verification THAT IT IS DEAD. Then take it back with a letter saying that it was verified as dead, and they agree to let you send it for data recovery. This way you can recover your data, and get the warranty honored also. This can be a bit tedious, but it is the best way i know of claiming warranty and yet being able to recover data.

If you don't have the letter, most often the warranty is not honored on the grounds of driver tampering.

Cheers, Axe :D

how come u guys get ur hd dead so early i have been using mine for years now no problem yet..i think u should keep ur hd cool to increase it's lifespan!!

The factors are luck, environment, usage scenario. I still have a 130 Mb seagate pata hdd that boots, and runs win98. this is from 1995. Then a 8Gb Seagate that also works OK from 1999. Yet I have had to RMA some of the new 500Gb/ 1Tb drives of Seagate because of the potential problem of dataloss on specific models.

You can never say.

I just lost 700 GB of data on my WD10EACS :(. Both my WD have had problems whereas my Seagate never had any problems, using it for 3+ years.

Cooling & power quality surely make an impact. Maybe even dust on the PCB .. God knows how these stupid things die off! Waiting for SSD's to eventually go down in price :D
