My Computer burst into flames

This has really happened yesterday though not the entire computer. :ashamed:

Yesterday night I was watching a video on the rig and suddenly something inside the cabby burst into flames. Thankfully I usually keep my cabby open so things like that should be quickly apparent, but thing is that like with any half decent gaming rig, there are a tonne of led's on all sorts of hardware blinking inside and a new kind of light is not quickly noticed. However the light I noticed was more intense and there was smoke and smell of burnt plastic. So a Milli second after I noticed the light, I realized some thing inside has burst into flames and quickly switched off the computer. It was a good thing as that minimized the damage. If the cabby had been entirely closed, I don't know if I would have noticed it before the entire computer burst into flames.

Today I took my time to analyze what went wrong. Obviously it was not the motherboard since the flame was not near the motherboard and the motherboard directly visible to me in its entirety since the cabby was open. It has to be somewhere near the HDD's. I hoped against hope that my 1TB WDC Black was not involved since i keep all my download's there although there is nothing too important (I always keep redundant copies of important stuff). It turns out that it was the this very drive that was involved. I had used the molex to SATA power adapter that came bundled with the drive. Apparently, the connector was somewhat of a loose fit and came off a bit to the side due the forces on the cables involved when you have 5 HDD crammed in your cabby. the connector shorted and started heating up. The plastic of the connector burst into flames and left telltale signs on the hdd as well (which would be enough to void warranty). The hdd connector and a bit of the PCB on the underside was affected although there seems to be no major damage that affects the usability of the drive. I did not want to take any chances, so I given it to Amarbir so he can test it and replace the connector if required.

Personally I have always thought that the power connectors (and even the data connectors) on these SATA drives are a really bad design. Without a firm grip between the connector and cable and the poor design of the connector on the hdd side, they are easy to come off, easy to break, easy to short and what not. This incident shows the kind of damage that can happen due to poor design of these connectors and cables. Would really suggest people keep a regular check on the status of their HDD power connections.

PS
: I have already reassembled the rig and everything else is working well. Typing from the same rig. Too bad I was hoping I would get a reason to convince myself to overhaul the entire rig (and get that Hex Core) :P Oh well maybe its not such a bad thing to be able to still use this rig.

LOL! Lucky you, :D

And when the HX1000 comes with tonnes of those SATA connectors why did you use another cable? Beats me! :S

thanks for the info

something like this happened with me also some 3-4 yrs ago when i hardly knew anything about assembling computers - i also kept my cabby open and i connected a rma'ed samsung hdd to the sata port and as soon as i switched on the pc i saw a very intense flash and smoke

i thought it was gone - whole pc was dead but to my safety i checked the hdd and there was some burns on it and luckily i got a new 160gb hdd rmaed for that burned 80gb hdd

ya man why dint you use the connector attached to your psu ?

Hehe..lucky you that it wasnt something more precious, but what about the data on the HDD, asked Amarbir whether you could recover it?
After reading the title of this thread I imagined something totally different though :P

The HX1000 sata power connectors are really pretty good and actually all my other hdd are connected via the HX1000 bundled cables. However I already had a overload of cables inside and it was too much trouble getting another modular SATA power cable compared to using the free molex connector already available on another modular cable. So I used the molex to sata adapter instead.

At this point I don't think it would come to recovery of data. Not too much damage to the HDD from what I could see. I am guessing it is still usable as it is. at worst maybe a connector change is required.

Its always better to check & double check your power cables. I tend to get paranoid & do it 3-4 times whenever I open or close the cabinet for anything. Hell I even see if my data cables to all peripherals are secured or not.

I'd seen my friends HDD getting fried in front of me 'coz of this Molex to SATA power converter... :(

damn man thats scary , i remember my x58-ud5 burning :O

u are lucky that atleast ur stuff is fine :)

lesson learnt : never use converter if u have psu cables available .. removed the coverter which i was using just to make 1 cable of hx850 supply all 5 sata devices :D

so you see what happens when you get lazy...

Its not as much about my being lazy as about trying to overcome the impossible. :P As I said, I have too much hardware inside, the modular cables are not exactly thin and my Stacker 830 is not exactly roomy. There were already enough cables inside to affect the air flow.

Actually I do that as well when I open my cabby. The thing is that I haven't touched the cabby in a while. The last time I did something was back in Feb.

I agree that these SATA power connectors aren't too well designed. There were other cases also with HDDs getting shorted out because of these connectors shifting about.

Are there SATA power connectors with clips? And do you think those would help?

Don't think there is any secured connector for SATA Power connector unlike data cable which comes with locks. That is more dangerous & flimsy than data connector.. I'd broken few trying to remove the connector. Interestingly its that tiny "L" shaped part which breaks pretty easily & makes HDD more vulnerable to getting short...

Good that ur PC is alive & going strong.

I always keep all my important data on my portable.

Guess it was a one off incident...... But I need to check my power lines 1st thing 2moro morning.....!!!

:D
