As the title itself indicates , i bought a new bike and my first one , the unicorn dazzler....

need some advice on how to ride the bike for the first 2 services !!!
everybody says , how you ride the bike for the first 2 services is crucial for the tuning
and mileage of the engine so need some advice on that......

i usually shift down at 2000rpm and shift up at 3000-3500 rpm.
on the fifth gear at 3500rpm it gives 46-47kmph,, thats the top speed i ride on now !!!

ny advice or suggestions?????

Don't drive at constant speeds for long durations, keep changing, just for the heck of it. This will get the new engine rolling. No quick accelerations, no screeching halts. Save those for later. If you can't wait to push the bike go for a long drive to your nearest weekend break location. Take along a partner :D

its also suggested to keep the riding under the speeds of 50-55 for the first 2000kms. ie. under 55 for first 1000 and under 65 for 1000-2000. this is mentioned in my bajaj bike's manual. should apply to yours too.. abit here-n-there. happy riding and drive safely.

Except that this is very hard to do especially with one's first bike. :-)

keep the rev below 6k rpm. but do take it to 6k rpm in every gear. acceleration should be slow and steady. and dont ride in a single gear for a long time. do this for first 1000kms. then slowly increase the rpm to higher levels.

^ 6K RPM? really? I don't drive at 6K rpm even in my regular commute! You would be revving the engine hard. For instance in 3rd gear at 6K rpm, I hit 45 - 50 kmph

I agree..... Man this is not a liter class bike..... 6k RPM for a new bike that has not run-in is an overkill in all senses......!!! :P

There is no fixed RPM for shifting up/down..... Ideally, u gently 'squeeze' each gear in such manner as to get the best (optimum) combination of acceleration & speed before u shift up.....

Same is true while downshifting..... Try to use engine deceleration for each lower gear to slow yourself down instead of pulling the brakes hard.......

Do NOT go over 60Kmph for the initial 2000 Kms.... (I am so careful about my cars & bikes that I don't go above 60 for the initial 5000 kms......!!!)

Do NOT offer trial/fun rides to your friends..... especially in the run-in period. Coz not all will look at the odo & tacho when it is not their bike..... And they have nothing to lose as well!!!

Ideally, Ur car/bike should be like your girlfriend/wife..... Don't let even your friends use (abuse) her..... I mean the car/bike.....!!! :P

WTF.... 6k RPM.

BTW whats the max on the rev meter on your bike?.

My red zone starts at 10.5k and 6k is suggested as a normal rev zone for me

i never go above 3500rpm !!!!!!!!

but actually i try to keep the speed constant for long duration ,, and try to be in same gear for a long time ,, for instance in 5th gear lowest speed is 25kmph ,, so i ll do 25-47 kmph on 5th gear most of the time .......

is this ok ?

my bike wont let me go beyond 10.5k in my regular commutes :p

not going above 60 for 5000km is atrocious. 2 services and 2000km is enough for run-in.
yes, dont ever ever give fun rides to friends during runin.

Indian bikes usually go at 80kmph at 6k rpm. but as I said earlier, if you reach 5th gear in city traffic, you will be accelerating very fast which is bad for the bike during runin. If I am right, you wont be able to go beyond 3rd gear in city traffic during runin period.

now the problem with not running in the engine properly, if you runin the bike at very low rpms the bike wont open up properly. i.e., it wont accelerate as fast as the properly runin bikes after say 5000km on the odo. then you will start complaining that the other guy's bike goes to 110 easily but yours doesnt. trust me.
yamaha, honda engines are bulletproof. they take abuse with pleasure so dont worry about screwing your engine.

btw, dont put synthetic oil for the first few services. use only mineral oil. try to change the oil before the first 500kms.

so what do u mean is ride the bike under 55kmph at low rpms till 2000km/2 services and then i can push it to 6000rpm etc !!!!!

or is it ok if i push it under 2000km ?

Lolzzz Yeah.... I know I am a bit over sensitive about my vehicles....

But then when u travel ~ 100kms per day (Bandra-Churchgate-Thana/Kalyan-Bandra) then 5000kms seems like a less than 2 months job..... Especially for the cars.....

I normally don't use my bike that extensively or else I'll have to get my back overhauled.....!!! Lolzzz :P

Whatever u do, don't push the bike in the run in period..... Maintain about 3.5k rpm as the upshift limit..... and go to a max of 4k rpm in 5th for the initial 2000 kms.

I cannot estimate the speed u'll get at 4k rpm on the 5th cog but I guess u should be content with that speed for the initial 2k kms atleast.....

Then push the bike all u want..... It'll be more than happy to be pushed....!!! :D
