A few days back I switched my computer on in the afternoon and there was a MASSIVE explosion from inside the computers case. It was like a major short circuit or like a large capacitor blowing up. I immediately shut off the computer and isolated my Antec TP II 550w PSU and switched it on and again there was a massive explosion - these explosions were very violent and loud - sounded like a type of short circuit you normally get from a high voltage AC line. I was totally petrified with this and was convinced that it was "GOODBYE COMPUTER" :(

As I did not have the funds for replacing the PSU, and I had no one living around me who has a PSU to handle my setup which includes a 8800GTS, for the last few days I was unable to check if there was any damage to any other hardware besides the PSU..... until today.... today I managed to buy a Corsair 620w PSU and I connected it up.... I was so scared after the explosions that I would attach one piece of hardware and power the computer then switch it off and then attach another piece of hardware :) I am happy to say that NONE of my other hardwares seems to be affected at all by the EXPLOSION !! I have read a number of posts in forums where people have had GFX cards and CPUs and Ram destroyed by such PSU explosions.

Before I power on the computer I now say a lil prayer first :ohyeah:

I am sure this problem was caused by Mumbai's high humidity levels which may have created a short ciruit in the PSU. This happened during the first heavy rain which Mumbai experienced this monsoon.

And..... YEAH.... the Corsair 620w is a GREAT PSU. :)

Same thing happened to one of my friends PSU... It was a Skyhawk power One 540... PSU ended up blowing but all the other PC parts were fine...

I don't know what to say to you congrats for the rest of the parts or bad luck for the PSU :S

Congrats that no more miss happening occurred due to the explosion.. :) Lucky you get all the hardware safe :ohyeah: Congrats again :)

Hmm so that was a reason u were offline all this while...

Even I seem to be having humidity probs, comp refuses to start after I shut it off...

What was your old PSU?
Antec TP2 550.:jumpy:  :bomb:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like i have to get a Corsair HX620 too- i have the same psu as you Eazy.:P
Coz if a meticulous user like u can go through that then God help me.

I may not be as lucky- but then i dont have 8800gts to blow up too.

Trying to cross my toes as i type this.:ashamed:
WCG at 100% and 24x7 keeps my PC nicely HOT, especially the psu.:(
So maybe trying to help mankind helps me by keeping my rig hot and moisture at bay.:ohyeah:

Used to shut down my rig during summers for an hour or so daily for some rest but i think the monsoons will see it running day in day out- except for snoozing the client for few minutes.:)

BTW, though i waste power this way, i prefer to keep all electronics stuff powered on, in standby during the monsoons.
I had read somewhere long back that it keeps the inners, esp ckts sufficiently warm to keep moisture/condensation at bay.:ashamed:

Great to see you back in action again Eazy:hap2: - i hope you have pardoned me by now.:ashamed:

p.s. I always say a lil prayer everytime i switch it on- especially after i have fiddled inside.:P
The user here is extremely risky.:Comp2:

Power Outages in areas affected by heavy rains have seemingly disprupted PCs in those areas.

Few friends have reported non-working rigs- esp no power up and no boot issues.:(

MAN ... the last electricity bill I got from BEST was DOUBLE of the previuous bills ... actually it is slightly more than double. :( ....and that is why I had started to switch off the PC in the afternoons :( and this is the reason I had a humidity problem with my PC.

Bikey if you see the PCB of the Antec PSU's your pants will fall off !! :ohyeah: The soldering is HORRIBLE !! :O .....PICTURE ATTACHED

@bottle.... in my setup the HDDs are the least important of the hardware..... as you know I have backups and backups of the backups on external HDDS :ohyeah:

@Switch.... I wanted to change the PSU anyways so I dont feel too badly about the death of the Antec. Only thing that I was worried about was the 8800GTS and my newly purchased 939 Opty 175 which seem to be working fine.... so far.... crossing fingers and touching wood.....

i live dangerously ... 1tb plus data with no backup .. every day is a game of russian roulette

yeeeshh..I can manually solder better than that....

Good to see you back Sir! :)

I think I could too... and I consider myself as a man with a deadly weapon when I have a soldering iron in my hand.... I am that BAD at soldering :)

:thanks!: Nice to be back....

Welcome back !! Was wondering where you had disappeared :D :D

And I think you were damn lucky you didnt lose any other computer components !!

I just developed a dislike for my psu.:(
After i bought it after so much waiting.

Prob is i can only get a new psu with the new rig in the pipeline.

I was little worried during the extra hot last days of May and early June when my PSU was heating up like mad- i felt it was adding more heat to my rig than the other usual culprits.

Now i wonder if it is safe to keep the cruncher running off that psu.:(

Maybe i will forego the warranty, open it up and add a better fan to it.:@

Can't show you pic but my Powersafe L&C 450 looked much better than that.:O

glad to see you back Eazy, and sorry for your PSU blow up.

as you are not regretting it better celebrate it :P
