Graphic Cards My Search for Better AGP Graphics Card

Novice
Hello all,

Allow me to ask a noob question here (I am really a noob when it comes to choosing graphics cards)..:anyone:

I have Intel Original D865GBF mobo
2.6 Ghz Intel P4 HT Core
1.5 GB RAM

My mobo supports 8x AGP.

Can you tell me which AGP graphics card to go for?

No preference for NVidia/Redeon as such.

The card:

1. Should not have overheating problems.
2. Should come within 6000 bucks.
3. Should support VGA monitor

Calling all the graphics card gurus out here for their opinion.

The Radeon HD3850 is the fastest AGP card you can buy.

If you need something cheaper, check out a GeForce 6xxx or 7xxx.

If you want something even cheaper, I have an old FX5200 lying around.

I would suggest that its a better option to upgrade the whole system. Decent AGP cards are priced very high and its seriously not worth it to buy one.

You could get like 2k i suppose for ur current CPU+mobo+RAM. So with 8k buy a AMD/Intel Dual core CPU and motherboard. Intel E2200/E3500 and a G31 mobo should be around 5.5-6k. donno about current AMD prices. 2 GB of ram for 1300 and a new grphics card of your choice. A Geforce 9500 GT for like 3.3k or Radeon 4670 for 4.3k. This system will give you Far higher performance for a slight increase in cost(compared to 6k i mean)

Edit: Tho if u dont want to upgrade the system a used AGP 3850 or 7800 GT would be your best bet

Agreed with Hunter, as it is your CPU just doesn't cut it. If you wish to stay on single core it has to be at least 3.0 ghz. Try upgrading to a cheaper C2D.

well a zotac ion will be faster then ur current setup, with a 6k budget + selling the p4, i guess u can go for a newer pc then investing on a graphics card.btw i too have the exact same configuration except the ram in 768mb and have a 6600gt graphics card.

Wow, so many nice suggestions. Thanks a ton!

Meanwhile I tried to be senior noob on graphics card and visited

canyourunit.com

to test some of the games I want to run.

After analysis they are throwing this page at me with suggested cards. :S

Comments please...:)

Though HD3850 is the most powerful AGP available but your procy will bottle neck the GPU.

With single core CPU you'll not see much difference in performance in between 6800gt and hd3850.

So my suggestion is if you really want an AGP for your system and don't want an upgrade then go for 2600 XT, 6600gt or 6800gt. Both are available in the TE market section.

^^ While his cpu is slow (oc it to 3.2ghz if possible!), I have to differ on the 6800 v/s 3850 comment. I went up from 6800gt to 8800GTS 640mb and the performance increase was drastic on an Athlon 64 3800+. Sure it's a pci-e system but it was a similar upgrade. If OP wishes to stick with his current system 3850 AGP would be great.

Well, you should upgrade the whole system, i had the exact same system and had decided to upgrade last diwali... Yeah the upgrade burned a hole in my pocket but every penny has been worth spent.... Anyway if you wanna buy a year old AGP card then i have a 7300gt lying around in my house.. PM me if you ae interested.
