My friend needs to buy a new phone for his wife. He basically needs a phone with all available features and most primarily music, multimedia, GPS with offline maps, movie watching, radio, 3G, wifi.
I have suggested him Nokia phones because of availability of ovi maps free navigation.
We dont care about all negative stuff surrounding nokia, just need a VFM device.
Have told him to refrain from android since it will make things more complex for him (personal opinion..do not flame me :P)
Suggested Nokia C7 and also told him to check out Gaurish's review here.
Has he got any other option in his budget ?
Touchscreen with bigger screen preferred.

PS: We will be buying the phone from letsbuy using the reliance 15% coupon so max discount we may get is 2000 rupees so considering this please suggest.

Buy Samsung Wave II S8530 at Best Price in India

with the Reliance discount it would fit in your budget nicely. This phone satisfies the very definition of being an all-in-one phone. Slightly worse in the GPS department as compared to C7 but camera has autofocus which the Nokia one doesnt.

He is inclined towards the wave 2 but i am not sure how good / bad is the variety of apps available for this OS. Also since he is going to travel to a foreign country in about 20 days, he will need good offline GPS there and i guess OVI maps is something to lookout for. I have never ever tested any samsung phone (bada) offline GPS navigator so cannot tell how good / bad it is.

Camera will mostly be an addon and not a primary decision maker since he already has a digital camera. So auto focus or no auto focus, does not matter.

My recommendation was nokia symbian because i have myself used 5230 and had used ovi maps, garmin, sygic etc for offline navigation and music, multimedia is always a forte for nokia so nothing to tell about that.

Also android relies heavily on internet for many of the things and since he is going to travel to foreign land, you never know whether procuring a data plan will be feasible or not, so android is a NO-GO. (again personal opinion)

Buy it...its a really good phone...
See, C7 is a simple device, and the screen is quite good. For your wife, I'm getting the gut feeling she ain't that into Android and OS rama and all that.

Symbian will suffice. It's UI is simple, gets the job done. and Plus, the phone is great and very fast.

please dont confuse OP
its for his frends wife and not his wife
sorry for the OT but i will. also recommend C7 coz though ppl flame symbian but besides the onscreen keyboard and input options i guess it actually gets the job done in a far better way than even windows mobile 6.5 used to!!!!
ovistore is also good enough for most practical purposes and offline maps are really what is missing sorely on the google maps!!

Peace Guys :)

Yes one factor which made me suggest Nokia is that it has offline navigation Out of box which is very much dependable, something which lacks on android at least for India.
Also no fuss about thousands of apps to do the same thing. OVI store may be limited with the number of apps but i am sure they would be refined enough so we get a good app for what we want to do.
I mean, in android you have thousand apps just for a alarm clock which is supposed to be a stock function anyway.

Writing all this, i am myself now feeling that symbian is a no-nonsense OS and does the job well.
May ditch my android lol :P

you should try to explain that to the reviewers

, i am myself now feeling that symbian is a no-nonsense OS and does the job well.

exactly what i felt when i was testing out C7 and X10 side by side

Complete android bashing... pity.. Req: Offline maps out of the box ..+1 for Nokia C7
@raksrules: Please shift to Symbain ASAP.. please put up your android in the market section :p
And once you start using it, we can have a nice comparison of Android vs Symbain :)

I also think Nokia C7 is a better choice for her; easier to use & never had a doubt that as a basic usage purpose Nokia is more than good enough.

Symbian vs Android again?? A match lost again & again by Symbian, let's see what Symbian^4 has to offer; hoping for a better interface this time from Nokia.

^^Each OS has its pros and cons and putting symbian downright as garbage is not the right thing in my opinion.

As of day (cannot comment about future), we see lots of people going after android handsets (i am one of them), but most of them i suspect are those who are technically sound and understand what android os is and know how to leverage its true potential. This includes people like us who use internet forums and all.

But any novice user who cares least about apps and all would any day go for Nokia / symbian due to ease of use (relatively..IMO) and familiarity.

Moreover people who have got android phones but have no clue what android is have done it only looking at the advertisements churned on TV/media and for the Oomph factor.

As of today Android is powerful than symbian, no doubt but that is because it is advanced than symbian.

But symbian is still very good for general no frills / no nonsense usage and does its job perfectly well.

Both have different sets of audiences

I am really not sure as to why many people (even here on TE) have always downright criticized symbian and treating it as garbage. Remember that this is the same OS which has helped us get our first smart phones, remember the highly over priced Nokia 6600 at 26000 rupees some years back ?? I still see many people using it and it was really awesome at that time.

<<PEACE>>

I am putting my view as far my perspective & Android is not complicated; one doesn't need to be Technically sound to be able to use Android OS, it's no Rocket Science. I wrote all those stuff for the over-smart who was implying that I know little about Symbian. I have explored Symbian a lot & I feel disappointed that there's so little to explore further despite of changes in the OS, it feels like the same OS I used with my Nokia 3660 back in 2004. Everybody is entitles to their opinion so stop criticizing people or implying stuff like 'how little I really know about symbian' (to whom it may concern).
