i need to buy a camera within a month. i am looking for good camera that can capture good quality photo with great amount of details. i am using sony dsc n2 for the past 4 years and nokia n8 for 6months. so i am not at all experienced with dslr, i can go for a dslr but is a low end dslr >> high-end point and shoot? budget 25k but extendable.

also i would like to know about the following, that i have experienced by using dsc n2 and nokia n8-:
1>sometimes while shooting during the night with flash on there is some white dots in pics. why does it happen and how to avoid it?
2>when shooting with automatic flash off mode, most of the image comes out blurred, even though the camera is and both the subject is very still.

How about canon S95? its like a mini DSLR, packing all features of a DSLR into a compact body. plus all the features of point-n-shoot also.

I would suggest get Canon 1100D + Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens...50mm f/1.8 lens will help you in night photography...1100D is available for 23-24k and 50mm f/1.8 for 5.3k....

1> I believe thats noise
2> Could be that the camera cannot focus properly due to the lack of ambient light and autofocus light.

If you want a great amount of detail in low light ,you would need a camera with a large sensor. So a DSLR or a SLD(single lens direct/digital) aka mirrorless cameras such as Sony NEX and m4/3 these are compact and takes pictures as good as a DSLR.

buddy u need tripod...try lower shutter speed 1/30 to 2sec...reasonable ISO like 400, and fstop at about 2.7..u will get good images...if thinking to buy new camera try canon. because the best thing i like is CHDK...gives lot of options

sorry for a noob question, but what is "Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens" means. also i find a 18-55mm lens that is supplied with canon 1100d. what does that 18 and 55 mean?

Those figures in mm represent focal length of lens. 18-55mm lens means it's focal length can be varied between 18mm to 55mm. Higher the focal length, more zoomed in objects appear. 50mm prime lens means it's focal length is fixed at 50mm. So there is no zoom in this lens. f/1.8 represent aperture. Lower the number in denominator of f-rating, wider the aperture, leading more light to fall on camera sensor and hence blur free pics even in low light. Hope it clears your doubt. Focal Length and F-Stop Explanation

I am not much into DSLRs. :ashamed:

What abt the SONY HX100V with 16MP and 30x zoom.
How good is this one compared to lower end DSLRs.
Just Curious to know

1100d is only 12mp while in recent times point and shoot comes with min 14.1mp..... so mp really have no importance????

Actually MP helps if you want to take large printouts of the pictures or you want to view them enlarged as on a big screen.
It doesn't do much to the picture quality which depends more on the sensor size, focal length and the type of lens.

so what is the final verdict, should i go for nikon d3100 and cannon 1100d.

also i would like to sell my sony dsc n2. its 4 years old, 10.2mp and touchscreen, with bill, box and everything. purchsed for 26000/- and 1gb memory card for 1990/- working flawlessly. how much should i expect if i sell it?

P&S cameras have got tiny sensors and pretty crappy zoom lenses.

If you take a Nikon D40 which has a 6 MP sensor with its kit lens and increase the size of the image to match a 16 MP P&S image, I bet you will still find the D40 to be as good or even better in IQ. :)

I think you should go with the 1100D and the lens kit that Konquerror has suggested.

And about your Sony DSC N2 you should expect around 5-6k in todays time. All the best.

I strongly recommend a Canon SX-30 for you. Its around 25k and comes with a good 35x Zoom lens. A handful of accessories including couplers, polarizers, etc. are available to keep you occupied as well. Instead of a proper SLR, which might just come in with a 5x Zoom equivalent lens, a super zoom will be a much better option.

The DSLR will obviously be better for still images. While for outdoor daytime shots the P&S cameras are quite decent.

Buy any of these...you won't regret...only problem with Nikon is that it's entry level lenses like 50mm f/1.8 are costlier than Canon counterpart...so if you are somewhat limited in budget get Canon...otherwise any one of them :) And MP count doesn't matter (well if you are not taking big prints)...I would prefer a 5MP high quality image rather than 22MP crappy image...

Why are you stuck with zoom? The 50mm prime lens which doesn't has any zoom (i.e. 1x zoom ;) )...can give you stunning photographs and your 35x zoom camera can't stand anywhere around it :P

@OP : what are your primary needs

If you need portability and travel photos and family portraits is the main purpose go for the enthusiast P & S or bridge cameras.

DSLR are very very superior to P & S in photo quality, but you will have to compromise on portability and you will keep burning a hole in your pocked every now and then :P

The options in P & S are Canon SX 30/130/230, Nikon L120, Panasonic FZ35/38/40, Fuji S1800/S2500/S3000 but budget ranges from 15k to 30k.

If you are not looking to print poster sized photos and main aim is travel family photography you can do with high end P&S.

PS : Disclaimer : I am a committed DSLR user,using Nikon D90 :P

for casual shots i have nokia n8. this time i want to try a dslr, portability is not an issue with me.

so i will go for canon eos 1100d. if i have an option to get only the body from the store should i grab it and purchase other lenseS rather than the stock 18-55 or take the kit and any 1 lens. budget is strictly not more than 30k. i will be using this camera for my leh ladakh trip this year. so maybe i need a telephoto lens.

please suggest exact lenses. thanks.
