See title.

Basically, just a surfing rig. If possible, something with a touch screen to I can make shortcuts to wikipedia, BBC etc on the desktop and tell him to tap and browse. Going to be very hard for me to teach him to operate zay mouse. :ashamed:

Also, I need to have remote access over the PC in case there's any issues. House is WLAN connected.

Suggestions please ...

Would not advise you to go in for a touch screen as touchscreen's comes with ultra portables which have very small (Read 12" )screen res which will be a big problem for old age. Get him a good 15" lappy. Also advise him to join a good computer startup course in a nearby institute :)

Nah. That won't be fun. Me gifting it to him. So will have to teach him how to operate it too .. 15" is too big. Will go for a 14.1"er then. Isn't there any good alternative to the mouse?

get him a usb mouse (meanin proper desktop mouse , not the small lappy ones.. guess he would find tat easier to use than a touchscree an or track pad.. )

an attach it to the laptop.. should solve the problem..

an even id suggest a 15 inch as he would want the resolution low (for bigger text size) an hence the bigger screen would be helpful..

maybe you can look for a good aftermarket pointing device.. just FYI, i recently purchased a Compaq C702TU laptop running 23.5k (for parents).. upgraded the RAM from 512MB and it's running very smooth (Vista Aero).

it is 15.4" widescreen and the text size does make it helpful for the elderly.. might want to consider that.
