Hi Seniors,

I am on the look out for a new rig.....
My requirements are:

It should be capable of running atleast 3 vmware instance at a time.
It should be able to run solaris 10 with oracle on it. and also compatible with redhat linux.. i am not much bothered about windows........ i need to study solaris, linux and oracle with the help of this rig....

I am not that much interested in gaming...........

So for this requirements i know atleast 4gb of ram( please suggest a good brand ) and 320gb is needed....apart from that can you suggest a good configuration including a good psu and cabinet......... I am really confused with the cpu/mobo combination........My primary requirement is performace and stability........i am ready to shell out upto 40k on the rig excluding monitor..........
thnx in advance

If you can wait, get the 45nm quads. Not sure when they are going to be in the market.

Right now -

CPU- Q6600 11k

Mobo - P35 or X38 based mobo 9k-13k

Ram - I use 2x2gb patriots, they are pretty good. You can also try OCZ 5-4-4-15 ones available through Frys. If you dont want much of any hassle, get EPP ram. You wont have to bother about setting things manually in the bios. - 5k-7k

ALso get a ram cooler - 2-2.5k

Video - 8500 should be more than good enough for your needs - No idea regd price.

PSU - Get the Corsair 620watt - 7k

Cabby - Get CM690 - 4.2k

HDD- around 3.4k I think

I think you can choose Mobo and ram to fit your budget. If you need to cut a bit more, go for Abit's IP35-E or IP35 if you can get one.

My use is pretty similar to yours except the Solaris and Oracle part.

C2D E6550 - 6.7k

Abit IP35E - 5.4k

Transcend 2GB (2GB x 2) 800Mhz - 3.5k

Seagate HDD 320GB 16Mb buffer - 3.5k

DVD RW - 1.5k

Zebronics Antibiotics - 2k

CM xtreme Power 600W - 3.5k

7300GT 256MB DDR2 - 2.5k

Viewsoncis 19" 9k

Ultima90I 2.2k

40k

Overclock the e6550 to 3Ghz.. No hassles.. even at 24/7 it wont create probs.

As I understand it, your requirement is a functional powerful machine.
My suggestion is pretty much the same as above except for a few minor differences.

CPU:
Q6600 11k (immediate, or 45nm proccys, if you wish to wait)
Mobo: The hot stuff right now Abit IP 35 E (~6k) or Abit IP35 Pro(~10k, has 2 lan ports, Raid, on the fly OCing)
RAM: Depending on whether you want to OC or not, take your pick either 4 x 1 GB (ranging from 4k - 7k) or 2 x 2GB as suggested above (~6-7k)
PSU and cabby : I have the Antec Sonata III, (~8k) comes with a 500W very good PSU, 620W IMO is overcapacity. If you prefer the Corsair line, the 450w (~4k) will serve your purpose too, buy any cabby you like, the CM 690 (~5k) CM 330(~2.5k) CM 534 centurion (~4k)
Video: Any simple one will serve your purpose 7100-8600 (2.5k - 6k depending on your taste)
HDD: Do you want to RAID? (if yes then the IP35E is not for you) 320 GB - max 3.5K WD, seagate, hitachi, samsung take your pick
Overclocking: if yes, how much? if not much then you need nothing more, if heavy OCing, get yourself an After mkt cooler (~3k) - and the Antec spot cool ( 1.2k) to blow air over your memory sticks.
Finally: like no food preparation is complete without salt, add KB, mouse and Optical drive to suit your taste.

These are MAx prices

IMO just as one would reject a P4 out of hand right now, the CM extreme series deserves the same fate, Overrated, inefficient PSU's - the CM600 Extreme is really 520W and and an efficiency of ~70% compared to 80+ of the Antecs and Corsairs suggested.

Won't the Ultima need a Fan too? or is that included in the cost?

hi all...............
thanks for your valuable suggestions..........
and regarding raid : i need it, so the mobo should Abit IP35 Pro isn't?

and i am not that much bothered about ocing because i need a rock solid system ( i am not that much interested in gaming ).............

btw i can wait upto feb last for 45nm proccys............
i think antec Sonata III is the cabby of right choice at this point...... thnk u TheIndian :) ( but have doubts regarding the powersupply.......... will it be sufficient for my needs?

please suggest
